OK, this totally rocks... We just got the Slingbox set up at my dad's (after a few hitches, since he uses an old Graphite Airport as his router, with no DHCP or NAT on Ethernet, no uPNP support, and a pair of SlingLinks just to make troubleshooting that much more interesting. I walked him through the whole manual configuration over the phone; it might've been easier to buy a modern uPNP router, but oh well...) Anyway I proved that remove viewing worked and that he'd be able to watch his TiVo when travelling now and he was really excited. Then today he told me his TiVo was almost out of program guide info because they now had to dial 1+areacode before even local numbers. I wasn't really sure how to solve this, but asked if I could connect to his Slingbox and poke around. Having tried to walk another remote relative through some TiVo phone troubleshooting before I know this can be a real pain, but with the Slingbox I was able to quickly reset the local phone number and discover (even on his old Series 1 box) the option for 10-digit dialing. Problem solved in less than a minute, thanks to Slingbox. While we were fiddling with his Airport (router) port mapping settings, I also set up port mapping for Apple Remote Desktop, so I can now help him on his computer, and (though I hadn't thought of it before) help him on the TiVo too should the need arise again. Very slick. Slingbox -- it's the new remote A/V tech support tool!
