Hi,

I would like to block the slingplayer client from operating on my network.

what ports do i need to block to prevent to prevent the client from connecting to slingbox?  i tried blocking port 5001 but that doesnt work as that just the outgoing port on slingbox side, the incoming port on slingplayer side seems to vary , in the 4100-4200 range, so how do i tell i to use only a specific range so i can then block that range?

Thanks.

Huh??  Where exactly are you trying to block access to a slingbox?

And the port slingplayer talks from will be a random port above 1024, normally between 1024–49151

 TCP    192.168.1.100:1892     192.168.1.75:5001      ESTABLISHED
 TCP    192.168.1.100:1899     192.168.1.75:5001      ESTABLISHED

Your going to have a VERY hard time blocking source port traffic.. Since this is normally always a random port.. Unless your talking ftp or dns, etc..

Also -- you can set the slingbox can be set to listen on a different port other than 5001 as well.

If you would give some details of EXACTLY what your trying to prevent, and where your trying to prevent it at?  Your router, firewall running on some machine?

Where is this slingbox your trying to prevent access to?  On your network or on the public net somewhere??

thanks for the response.  I want to block slingplayer from functioning at the router level, so that it will be blocked on any computer using that router but accesible from anywhere's else.  The slingbox i am trying to block is not on the same network, i am accesing with remote access.

My objective is to block it on the incoming end, either by blocking acess to those random ports (by making them non-random, is that possible?) or maybe by blocking acess to sling directory service.  I know i could just block slinbox output by blocking 5001 on the slingbox side router but that would completely disable it whereas i just want to block it in a single location.

Not sure why you want to do that. But if you are trying to limit folks getting on your Slingbox, how about a change of password?

no i want to allow someone to use it but want to prevent that same person from accessing it from one specific router ("why" is complicated...)

March 17, 2007 8:48 PM

I am still at a loss of where this person is coming from -- what do you mean allow him to use it, but not from a specific router??

Please layout this network where your slingbox is located.. And where exactly this person your trying to come from would be coming from?

Sorry -- but you can not control what port the slingplayer will be coming from.. Thats kind of what "random" port above 1024 means ;)

Most every network application works this way..

Is this person on the private side of your network - or from the public net? I am assuming your sling is connected to your home network, behind a NAT router.. Is this not the case?  Where is this user that your trying to block from a specific router located?

jasto , you need to play with egress filtering.Basically what you are asking for can only be achieved by a default "deny all"  rule, and very strict "allow" rules.

It's not impossible to set up, but, definitely a pain in the butt.

Maybe if you gave us a few more details as to your exact goal, and the netwok topology...

my aim is to allow my kids in general to use slingplayer but to block it during schoolweek etc...

March 29, 2007 5:55 AM

my network setup is as follows:

Slingbox is connected by ethernet to netgear wpnt 834 router in my vacation home then slinging over net to my home (not same country as slingbox location)  where i have netgear wgr614 router with my computer connected via wireless. I would like to place the block as described above either on the wgr614 router level as a firewall rule (the router has a scheduler for all the firewall rules) or individually in a hidden fashion on the computers i want to limit access.  the slingbox is connected to a dynamic ip dsl so blocking slingbox source ip is not possible.

I realize this is quite unusual and complicated so thks in advance to anybody with a solution.

 thks.

Complicated, no not really.. I think your very confused about what source port is, an where to block this is all.

Your sling is listening on 5001 by default.. So on your wgr614 block outbound access to port 5001 whenever you do not want your kids to use the slingbox.

Page 4.2 of the manual  for your router

ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/wgr614v4_ref_manual.zip

Talks about blocking access to internet services, create a service for your sling, ie tcp port 5001 and block this whenever you want.. either all the IPs on your home network, or just the ips of your kids machines.

Not complicated at all - very easy to do!

You shoudl be able to schedule the 834 to stop forwarding 5001 during a certain time,  and make sure you  turn off UPNP, else the slingbox might enable the port itself.

i could probably block the slingbox outgoing connection on the router it is connected to but that not my goal as i would like to block it on 1 specific router on the receiving end ( and still be able to sling to other pc's outside that router). if i block 5001 on the wpnt834 it will block slingbox completely.

You should be able to block the Slingbox's IP from being accessed during certain hours. Or prevent certain IPs on the LAN from using certain ports. For example, you could filter port 5001 to a specific IP during a specific time. This shouldn't be too hard and most routers allow it to some extent. You may even better want to block it at the MAC address level. The best way is to block the client (ie: your kid's computer) from accessing the Slingbox. And if you block it at the MAC level, then if your kid attempts to change his IP, it still won't work...

Just fyi, Vista allows you to block specific applications and log on times.

Have 2 accounts for the kids - "Week" and "Weekend"

Block Slingplayer in Week. Allow for Weekend.

Log on hours for Weekend are "Sat and Sun only".

Done.
