Anyone try this yet? Will it work with XP?
Hello all,
Ive created a portable slingplayer.exe program which allows you to run slingplayer without installing anything, quite simply; you download slingplayer.exe that i created and place it on any portable device, external drive etc and once you run it you will get the sling player. with Vista support.
Pictures:

How is this possible?
I use a program called Thinstall as a registered developer which allows me to create portable programs which can be run without the headache of registery files, dll etc since it packages the entire runtime environment within the .exe itself thus eliminating the need for the end user to have to actually install anything and run the program straight away!
What does this mean for you?
It means you could run slingplayer.exe from your portable device or transfer it to a friends desktop/device without installations etc, or you could share it over your network very fast and very easily, run it from guest accounts, internet cafes etc. Possibilities are limitless. You can learn more about what you can do from here: http://thinstall.com/sales/demo.php where they show an example with portable Microsoft Office running without installation.

swatfa,
You really should post this file on a site that will allow more than one download. When I attempted to get your file, it said the download limit was already exceeded. I would love to try this version out on my USB Thumbnail drive, but can't. Of course, if it would gladly let me download all I want if I paid for a Premium account!
Not sure how I reached my download limit as well, since, as a customer, I have never downloaded from them before -- but they want my money too...
hmm, ok i have a premium account:

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could download and host this on another sever, i have a slow connection here and uploading it again is a headache.
Thanks
I finally was able to download this application yesterday afternoon. This morning I ran it off of my 1 GB USB Thumbdrive. This program actually works! It is pretty cool! I was able to watch my satellite TV like normal. The only problem I had with it is that I was forced to take the basic remote control for my Dish Network 510 DVR. I was not able to choose the one that looks just like my actual remote. With the USB Slingplayer, I think swatfa locked down some of the options. The main thing is this program runs real well off of my thumbdrive. I can get by with the basic remote, but it would rock if I could choose the normal remote for my DVR. Good job swatfa! Thanks for sharing this with the community!
I put it on my USB Thumbdrive. I've tested it on my desktop Dell Windows XP, my wife's Sony Desktop -Vista and my Toshiba Windows XP Laptop. It works on all 3.
The only thing I couldn't do was have an image of my Directv remote. All of the remote keys work but my Directv remote was replaced with a solid black one.
Is there a way to change the image of the remote?
Thanks for this great little program! I know I will put it to good use.
This is very neat but can someone explain how this is different in practice from simply installing Slingplayer and then copying the Slingplayer folder from the Program Files/Sling Media folder to a USB stick? I seem to recall that some people had problems getting that to work on a tightly locked down office computer but for most situations it would seem to work fine. No doubt I'm missing something so I'd appreciate an expanation.
I keep everything related to my slingbox on my USB Drive. That way I can watch TV on any computer with internet and not leave a copy of the software for someone else to access my TV.
Of course I have sling player on my desktop, laptop and work computers but I will, on occasion, use someone else's computer or a shared computer in a coffee shop or internet cafe.
I would like to try this program, but the account at the hosting site is expired.

My question also. I've copied slingplayer to a thumb drive and then used it in a number of different (XP) computers with no problem at all. Have not tried Vista yet.
As long as the computer you are on is able to access and launch an exe file from the thumbdrive, this should work for you. No need to install or create registry entries. If the computer is locked down to the point where you can't do that, I don't think this other process would work either.

Come on guys, don't be a tease! :-) Can somebody PLEASE hook me up with this little jewel. I'm experiencing the same download/registed- user problems as the previous replies. Since I initiated the convo I should at least be able to give it a whirl w/o paying for it.
PS: I tried copying the Slingmedia folder to my thumb drive but I had no luck. Sling Player could not connect. Is this a sign or is this Thinstall .exe the magic bullet to get around my firewall.
I'm intrigued by this, but I'm also not seeing any major difference than just copying your Sling Media folder to a USB drive. However, If all of you feel this download has value to the community, is virus/malware/spyware free, and think that everyone should be able to get it, I'd consider hosting this file on SlingCommunity. Show of hands?

Why bother - I have two versions of the Player on my USB - one for viewing an encrypted with all the bells and whistles. One for viewing an un-encrypted stream - allowing recording, if I am on a machine with the At-Large recorder installed.
To start the voting, I vote "No".

I downloaded this and tried it on my work computer.
When starting up it asks for a file in my "program files" folder. Which means you DO need to install the regular software for it to work...
Which completely defeats the purpose of a mobile app.

Interesting, but I didn't see that at all. I put it on my 2GB USB, ran the file, and it asked me to set up a Slingbox. Copied and pasted the Finder ID info from a text file I also had on the USB drive, and that's all that was needed.
However, I'm getting 0x8007274D errors at the office and am unable to access remotely so far, but that's another story :-(
This is great, I'm going to have to try it (when I find a computer that doesn't already have the SlingPlayer installed -- they're on most machines in my range!).
A friend has a Mac. If I install the Mac Player on his machine, would I be able to do something analogous (carry Win and Mac versions of the player on my USB drive)? What folder would I look for on the Mac (I know nothing about that platform and the friend is not a computer person). I assume it has to be installed on one machine before I can copy to the key.
Thanks!
=aw
Downloading the mac version and just carrying around the program file will work on a mac. OS X doesn't shit all over your hard drive like windows does.
Sounds the good old days of DOS. :)
Great thanks, I'll try that on the friend's Mac first.
=aw
Download it from my website....
and nice job on this release...
