It seems that its possible to install a fully working Mac OS X on the Apple TV:

http://www.appletvhacks.net/2007/04/01/mac-os-x-running-on-apple-tv/

Would it make any sense to try to install the Mac slingplayer ona a Apple TV (until the Slingcatcher comes along), or is the Apple TV too underpowered to do the job?

best regards

Lars

Possibly.  It uses a Pentium M which is a very good processor.  Might be worth trying SlingPlayer.

I'm waiting to hack mine until these things get more refined and settled.  I really want a media player and not another Mac.  It just needs to be able to play MPEG-2 video files and internet audio and video streams.  Then I'll be happy.  Yeah, I could do that with OS X and it as a Mac, but it's much more elegant if there's actually a UI for it...

anyone have any luck with this?  I'm interested in Slingplayer on Apple TV also.

Yes, I also am spending some time trying to get the Mac version of SlingPlayer to run on my AppleTV. Here is my current methodology:

I installed SlingPlayer on my PowerBook G4 and then moved over the SlingPlayer application and from ~/Library/Preferences the files "com.slingmedia.plist" and "com.slingmedia.slingplayer.plist" as well as the SlingMedia folder and it contents found there as well.

I installed the Applications Menu Upgrade from AwkwardTV.org and set it up to run SlingPlayer.

It boots up and starts to connect, when the dialogue box asking for my email information to register SlingPlayer comes up, which, of course, I cannot enter the information on my AppleTV. However, I do remember this dialogue box coming up the first time I ran SlingPlayer on my PowerBook.

Where do I find the appropriate file that contains my email address on my PowerBook, so I can move it over to the AppleTV and go to the next step? Thanks!

Well, I connected a keyboard and mouse to my AppleTV and I was able to enter my email address into the Dialog Box from SlingPlayer and get past that hurdle...

Now, it connects and starts to stream and then quits back to the AppleTV UI...

 Any ideas?

Sounds like you made great progress. Anything new since this last post? I will be getting into this soon, so I will share anything I learn.

Soon after my last post, I went upgrade to the Take 2 software for the AppleTV.

As of today's date the Applications Menu has never been upgraded to work with Take 2, with it's author indicating he no longer has time for the project. He did, however, open up his code for others to work on (my code days are long gone!).

On another front, there is some indication that nito may include Application Menu type support in the next version of nitoTV.

Unfortunately, that would still leave me where I was before, with it not running. Some say it is due to the limits of RAM in the AppleTV. But I will work on it some more when Application Menu support comes to Take 2.

My wife and I travel with our AppleTV and having SlingPlayer capability would be a big Plus!

It could also be related to the video format, similar to the iPhone incompatibility (if this post is accurate):

"native realtime h264 encoding" may be needed for ATV to be happy. But then again, if you've got a hacked ATV with perian and/or flip4mac on your ATV, it should be okay.

Enough contemplating...I'm going down to get my ATV today and will begin my quest to get Slingplayer working on it. nitoTV update about application menu: http://nitosoft.com/blog/?p=41

Yep: you're up to date. I have two ATV's: one on v1.1 of Apple's software with the Flashdrive upgrades and the other at v2.01 of Apple's software with the Flashdrive upgrades. My wife travels with the v1.1 and she is taking it with her tomorrow...

I am interested in installing and using Slingplayer on my Apple TV at home (my Slingbox is based elsewhere) - did anyone have any luck this?

The closest I have come to getting it to work, is Slingplayer applications launches and the remote control appears on the left side and then back to an Apple Logo until I click the Menu button on the remote to get out of it.

I installed it on my AppleTV as follows:

Install nitoTV v0.4.8

From a Macintosh that has slingplayer installed and correctly logs into your slingbox, copy the following over to the AppleTV:

1. In the Frontrow folder, add an Applications folder and copy Slingplayer over to it.

2. From the ~/Library/Preferences folder on your Mac: copy to: Frontrow/Library/Preferences, the following:

A. the SlingMedia folder; and

B. the two files:

(1) com.slingmedia.plist; and

(2) com.slingmedia.slingplayer.plist.

Now from the nitoTV menu, go to the Applications menu and then launch Slingplayer...

Post your results...

How I did it (on my 1.0 ATV, haven't updated it yet) is copy slingplayer to my hacked appletv and also copy core osx fonts over (there are some missing on the appletv that slingplayer uses). Run slingplayer app, works great.

The fonts was critical issue for me. Before copying fonts over, the application would run but nothing would display in the directory boxes (for choosing which sling to connect to).

Again, this is with an old 1.0 Appletv and I did this about 1 yr ago

Which fonts do you copy over and from where and to where? If you copy them to the OSBoot partion, how do you get past permissions? Thanks!

Well... I got as far as you did.
Slingplayer ask for my email adress (how did you enter it ?) and I could see the player connecting and my favorites channels appear at the bottom then "Crash".
:-(

PS : do you have the slingplayer window in fullscreen ? Mine is about 1/4th of my screen resolution.

Please crynz, could you give more details regarding fonts you have added ?
Thanks in advance.

Just noticed that you are already getting close to what I am trying..

I have a ATV 2.1 with latest NitoTV installed. Did anyone get it running in this setting and what would be the steps?

October 7, 2008 11:13 PM

This would be great if someone could get slingplayer working on appletv, keep posting your results

October 13, 2008 1:41 PM

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch you can use it with the Remote app to enter your email address when prompted on ATV.

Any progress anyone?

I made some progress today ! Here's what I did :
- upddated NitoTV to version 0.5.7
- updated SlingPlayer to version 1.0.6 and copied the app to the AppleTV
- copied to AppleTV the 3 files : com.slingmedia.plist , com.slingmedia.setupassistant.plist , com.slingmedia.slingplayer.plist

Results:
- The app starts !
- It asks for my email adress (unfortunatly I don't have any USB keyboard and the "remote" app of the iPhone is not usable)
- I CAN SEE in the background the slingplayer window STREAMING PERFECTLY my slingbox located in France (I'm in Spain)

Downsides :
- no way to enter email or interact with the app (but I guess it could be fixed with a USB keyboard/mouse)
- the slingplayer's window uses only about 1/9th of my screen (don't know if it can be put Fullscreen or not)
- don't know how to quit without unplugging the AppleTV...

Can someone with a USB keyboard could try the various upgrade and tell us if it works ?

Yes,
Works somewhat.....same set up hacked AppleTV, Nito 0.5.7, Slingplayer 1.06, loads fine, but with USB keyboard and mouse, most attempts to move Window with mouse result in Apple Logo > restart.

Same for Top Slingplayer menu, which depending on the TV screen size, isn't always visible.
The stream, set to manual, 640 x 480 is pretty good, certainly watchable, and with some futzing can be made to be close to Full screen.
Audio is very good, syncing very well.
Maybe mapping a software remote to my Apple remote to control Slingplayer commands would be a start??

So, a B-, good first attempt, bit flaky on App Window management, maybe the AppleTV cpu/gpu is maxed out by Slingplayer????
