It seems that its possible to install a fully working Mac OS X on the Apple TV:

http://www.appletvhacks.net/2007/04/01/mac-os-x-running-on-apple-tv/

Would it make any sense to try to install the Mac slingplayer ona a Apple TV (until the Slingcatcher comes along), or is the Apple TV too underpowered to do the job?

best regards

Lars

Well, as I said it DOES work...just need either an RF mouse or a "software mouse" to enable Slingplayer features......

I am wondering too, if the ATV IS maxing out running all this........???

Ok fixed my last problem, the only one I have now is getting my usb mouse/keyboard to work, i have tried turbos script but I can't seem to get it working. I have take 2 update installed. Is there any easy software patch to get the usb drive working?

October 26, 2008 10:30 PM

Having not been able to install a USB mouse (some step-by-step directions would be great, as all the other guides I have found have not worked for me!), I have only got up to the part where the software asks for an email address, I can see the software connecting in the background, but when the stream starts apple tv restarts so I never see a picture, any ideas?

October 27, 2008 3:52 AM

Ok I'll just carry on the discussion myself!
I somehow managed to install the mouse (don't know how, probably through nito tv's smart installer) and got the pointer to come on all the time. Now I can get rid of the box that pops up asking for your email and I can tinker around with the settings. But I still can't get a picture - the status says connected and the remote pops up but as soon as the stream is about to start i get back to the apple logo. It's so frustrating - I can get full size video as well, so it is agonizingly close, I just need someone to help me over the line.
Someone mentioned something about core fonts being copied over - I have a take 2 firmware and the fonts on the software and prefs look fine- this would stop the stream from loading would it? If so how, how many, where from and where to, do i copy the fonts to?
Any help at this stage would be great!

Latest news: I was talking to someone who had slingplayer up and running on appletv and after he updated to take 2 the app kept crashing and only got up to what i got up to above. He thinks that apple took key frameworks away from the update and that could be the problem. The people who have got it working, are you running 1.0 firmware?

October 27, 2008 12:09 PM

Maybe it is the v1.0 that is the trick. I get to the same point as you on v2.1 with nitoTV v0.57

I would be surprised that nito's smart installer would not reinstall whatever is missing, tho...

October 30, 2008 8:21 AM

I ran Sloth on my iMac's version of Slingplayer before and after a stream to see what processes started up when a stream began. I did this because the software keeps crashing just before a stream, indicating that something is missing.
I found a few files mainly ones that belong in the system folder and transfered them over to the apple tv but still had no luck in getting the software to run.
Anyone still reading this care to help?

October 30, 2008 5:25 PM

Heres all I transferred over.
My Slingplayer 1.06 App, from Applications.
My Slingmedia Folder from User/Library/Preferences
My com.slingmedia.prefence list from above
My com.slingplayer.preference list ditto

I restarted my AppleTV, fired up Slingplayer App, managed ( eventually) to keyboard in my email address etc, using the
"enter/return" key as opposed to mouse, and (eventually) the Slingplayer started streaming.
BUT my initial attempts to move Slingplayer Window/ access Slingplayer menubar preferences were causing a crash.
I stopped streaming THEN I could access the above mentioned parameters......then re started streaming.

Thats it.........I am using a Catcher now, so really haven't futzed around with it in days!!!

What versions are you using:

AppleTV?

nitoTV - still at 0.57?

Thanks.

October 30, 2008 8:20 PM

AppleTV 2.1
Nito 0.5.7, BUT I am using the (lazymans) AppleTV Flash hack, which I just updated to 3.3.4, Nito is listed at 0.6, and Slingplayer App on ATV still works......!

Well it must be a codec or other system file the AppleTV flash hack installs on the system, because even with everything else i've done the streaming never loads, it always crashes before the stream loads. Which gives me the impression that the software is trying to access a codec that it can't find or some other file that is needed for displaying/streaming video.
I have copied all the same preference files/folder, I copied the app to users/frontrow/applications and it didn't work and I think I have also tried to run it from /applications as well, where did you put it?

October 31, 2008 1:46 AM

It works!

I did a Factory Restore to v1.0

I did an Apple upgrade to v2.2

I made an ATVFlash patchstick v3.3.4 to ONLY add SSH

I did a downgrade to v2.1 with these instructions:

Follow these instructions to downgrade to AppleTV v2.1:

http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/OSupdate

Make ATVFlash Patchstick v3.31 and upgrade ATV with nitoTV 0.57

Run freshly upgraded ATV and then upgraded nitoTV to 0.6.0...

Using nitoTV, installed Perian, mPlayer codecs, Turbo Kextloader, and Smart Installer (using both 10.4.9Intel.dmg and recovery.dmg)

Added SlingPlayer 1.06 to Applications folder and copied over the two com files and the Sling folder to Preferences.

It launched! I haven't tried anything else yet, but I'm watching TV from 2,000 miles away...

October 31, 2008 3:59 AM

Great stuff!
I thought it would work that way. When you made the ATVFlash patchstick what wiki did you use, can you link it? So you made one with 3.3.4 then another with 3.31? The mPlayer codecs, are they with nito installer? And the turbo kektloader, is that through nito as well? Why did you use the intel 10.4.9.dmg AND the recovery.dmg? And where can you get the recovery.dmg from?
Did you copy it to the applications folder in the root menu or in the users/frontrow/applictions folder?

ATVFlash: www.applecorellc.com

Once nitoTV is installed it has the ability to install perian, mPlayer codecs, Turbo's kextloaded and its Smart Installer, which looks for two files saved to the ATV: a copy of the Apple 10.4.9Intel upgrade dmg and the recovery.dmg from an ATV that has v1.0 of the ATV software installed. The Smart Installer then add certain missing functions/frameworks back to the ATV, such as the ability to use AFP.

Anyone know where to get the recovery.dmg file from?

November 6, 2008 2:38 AM

When you do a Factory Restore, does the AppleTV go back to version 1.0?

If so, check out the forum.awkwardtv.org and search to see how to extract it from your ATV.

No that's the thing, it doesn't - I have 1.1.
And I can't find it anywhere. Do I even need it? What does it install from the recovery.dmg anyway? Nothing that SlingPlayer needs to run does it?

NOTE:

An engineer of the Hauppauge HD-PVR 1212, which runs on Windows and Linux HTPC software, is looking for interest in the Mac community for a software capture program that he is developing:

1. This is the only consumer priced device that currently exists that will digitize HD content from the analog component output and digital/analog audio (including 5.1/AC3).

2. Currently outputted files from the included ArcSoft Total Extreme capture software (Windows) can be input and transcoded in the current beta build of HandBrake 0.9.3 for the AppleTV as well as other devices.

3. Future versions will include add'l capabilities, but the engineer needs feedback to quantify Mac interest before he puts too much time into the project.
