Does anyone have a step-by-step guide for installing SlingPlayer on the AppleTV? Or is my best bet to read this this thread a few times?
Do I need a Mac or can I do this with a Windows PC?
Thanks in advance for any info!!
It seems that its possible to install a fully working Mac OS X on the Apple TV:

Would it make any sense to try to install the Mac slingplayer ona a Apple TV (until the Slingcatcher comes along), or is the Apple TV too underpowered to do the job?
best regards
Lars
I finally got around to doing it today and it works, does anyone still want me to post a step-by-step guide?
Yes, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post a step by step guide! :-) Put as easily as possible would also be great! I would consider myself pretty good with computers, but with Macs I'm still a bit shaky...
Ok all done, here it is http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/How_to_install_SlingPlayer_on_AppleTV
I posted it on AwkwardTV because it is much easier to read with the formatting in place. Let me know if there are any problems, and anyone who wants to change any mistakes or add anything new to the article feel free to do so.
I have been trying this for a bit now and I just followed your guide and I am still having the same problem, it connects and just sits on starting stream, not sure what the problem would be, I have started over and over and get the same result every time. Any ideas Greg??
ok I got it to work finally, I have all of my setups running through a domain and port 5005 so I change the appletv to connect with the slingbox ID instead and it connected and is working, this is good stuff.....
Just in time for March Madness - excellent timing greg!! Thanks, I'm doing this today.
Update: It works! I did not do the reset and did not need the recovery.dmg. Also I had to create the folders Applications and Documents in the frontrow user folder on the ATV. I was tripped up a little at first when I didn't see the mouse and the keyboard didn't work...until I realized you don't see these until you launch SlingPlayer and focus is on the MultiFinder.
A tip: I was able to change window position to center it by changing the window position of slingplayer on my macbook, exporting preferences and importing those preferences on the slingplayer on ATV (after copying that exported file to the ATV of course). I tried having it startup in full screen but caused occasional crashes.
One last note: sound does not come out through my optical out, but it did come through the HDMI connection to the TV.
Great tip with the window position, I was hoping this would be the case as last time I installed the app the window was right in the middle giving me the impression it was a pref. file problem - just haven't got around to doing it yet!
I am using HDMI too so I have no problem either.
That's really handy that you don't need to use the recovery.dmg file, it will mean anybody with the time should be able to get this going without any troubles! Did you use the combo update from the apple website via the link I used?
I will update the wiki to reflect these observations, thanks kmcital.
Hey Greg,
great work!!
I've followed your instructions, but all I get is the white apple logo and the multifinder bar..
Any help?
(ATV 2.3 and SlingPlayer 1.0.7) THNX!!
What's a multifinder bar?
I don't really know what the problem is, the first time I tried to install it, it would always crash before the video started. I factory restored my Apple TV and followed the instructions I wrote and it worked the second time. The only advice I can give you is to try again sorry.
greg Rice, sorry for the late response...
yes I used your link for the combo update.
Watched the NCAA final game last night in full screen on my ATV via slingplayer. The video could not keep up with the fast action. Not sure if that is the video chip on the ATV or the streaming by the slingbox over the internet. Picture was choppy when there was a lot of movement (running down the court).
All in all, it was great.
The AppleTV has only a 1 GHz Pentium M processor. I doubt it would do very well with Sling streams...I'm surprised if people have it working very well...
Slinging w/ Catcher, ProHD, Pro, Solo, AV, and a Classic. Two TivoHDs, Roku Photobridge and a Roku Soundbridge, AppleTV, and Vudu.www.na9d.net Follow me on Twitter
I had to bump the resolution down to 320x240 and then it plays very smooth, it doesn't look to bad either, still pretty good quality, give this a try and see if you can get it to work better for you.
I follow all the instructions and the Slingbox software is working perfect except I only get sound when the ATV is conected via compsite, when is on HDMI I do not get any sound, actually it completly disables the sound of the ATV even after I exite the slingbox aplication.
So I have to reset the ATV to get the sound back in all ATV applications.
Any help will be appreciated
