I have Comcast cable broadband and consistently get 350-380 kbps upload speeds on my computer when directly connected to the modem. Introducing a Linksys WRT54GS router, the upload speed ranges between 70-200 kbps on succesive tries at speedtest.net.

Slingbox works great on LAN but very choppy on remote. Over 1 hour of help from Sling support noted that the variable upload speed was below 250 kbps min and was probably the source of my problem.

I've gone through 1 3/4 hours and three levels of support from Cisco with the router (doing everything under the sun) and the upload speeds were never consistently improved.

 1) Can anyone confirm that they have gotten the slingbox to work with this router without some serious modifications to the router setup?

2) Are modem upload speeds usually degraded by a factor of 2 (besides being highly unstable) with most routers?

This is probably the most common Linksys router being sold and this type of degradation of upload speeds would render it unusable for the slingbox.

Ready to visit the return line.

Sounds like a bad router. I usually don't see much if any degradation of speed over routers. But, honestly.. if you could bump up your upload speeds from comcast, that's what I'd do. 350-380 is not much. I have a 768 connection and I still wish I had more.

1. The WRT54G/GS/GL routers are, perhaps, the most popular router on the market. They're used by a lot of people with Slingboxes. I have a WRT54GL myself, though I've replaced the firmware with 3rd party code to get some (non-SB related) options.

2. You should not see any noticeable speed degradation from the use of a router, that is not normal.

Either something is wrong with the router, or the configuration. Nothing else changes, right? You have the PC connected directly to the modem, then you connect the Linksys between the two, using the same cables, etc? (Obviously one more cable.)

I'm using a D-Link DGL-4300 and it works great.  I get full Upload speed from my Comcast Broadband service.   As long as someone else isn't on your Internet connection at the same time, you should have the same speed as before with the Router.

I have the same problem, it is so frustrating, my usual streaming speed is 320 which is ok, but most times it is optimizing at around 50

If anything else is using your broadband connection - someone surfing the web, transferring files, P2P file trading, etc - that will cut into the SlingPlayer performance. And you may experience slow downs during peak use times as the community network can be loaded down.

I was over in the evdo forum (www.evdoforums.com) reading about all the problems with Linksys routers and upload speed. Quite intereting to hear numerous people complain about upload speed (an entire thread devoted to the subject) in a completely unrelated application to 'slinging'.

These might be popular routers but I'm runnning as far as I can from them.  I'm sorry I wasted an hour of sling support in trying to get it to work.

Yea i'm having the same problem with my WRT54GS upload speed. i'm only rocking 10kbps now.....?? it just happen a couple weeks ago i notice. i been through so many stages with cisco to fix this. my friend that lives next door has the same internet i have and but he uses a belkin router and he has no problem with his upload speed. i tested it over and over and it boiles down to the WRT54GS router. i tried everything . i believe my router went bad each computer that is hooked up on it, only pushes 10kbps upload speed now , especially when i'm using AIM and sending files to my buddies

You could try replacing the firmware with DD-WRT or Tomato.

I just started to have the same problem with upload speed when using the slingbox in a remote location. I've had an entirely new cable box installed from Time Warner, but the streaming speed is extremely intermittent(anywhere from 700kpbs to 20kpbs). The router I use is an old linksys 802.11b, and I also pay for higher upload speed via the Internet provider. Do you think it's possible that the older model of the router('b') can't support a higher upload speed? I was planning on buying a new linksys router but am hesitant to now after reading some of the posts above.
