Hi,

I would like to be able to record from my slingbox. Are there products available from sling to do this? If not, what products do other "slingers" recommend.

I particularly need this for travel - I am often stuck at some airport / hotel where I can´t go online and I like to watch my recorded programmes. I currently do this via VHS and Pinnacle Studio

Thanks

The stream from current Slingboxes is encrypted and cannot be recorded. With a Slingbox Classic with early firmware and an early SlingPlayer the streams aren't encrypted and there is software to record it. (You may be able to do this with just an early SlingPlayer, but I'm not sure of that.) If you want video on your laptop, you'd be better off using a DVR like TiVo and TiVoToGo to directly copy the shows to your laptop before you leave home.

(I also run GizmoLovers.com)

Actually, this is incorrect.  I like the recordings from Slingbox/Slingplayer better than the recordings from my tuner Embarassed.  There are two ways to do this -

  1. Using Applian's "AtLarge Recorder" fount at "www.applian.com"
  2. Using the tool posted at "http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/sl... You will need to join the Yahoo group to use this file.

Both work with the newest US based Slingboxs, but you will need an older, unencrypted player.

There is a totally free Slingbox recorder at mReplay.  You can watch, control, record, edit and share your Slingbox.... all from a browser.  It works with ANY slingbox... encrypted or not.

My favorite function is the "back in time" recording... where if you see something cool, you can click the 30 or 60 second buttons and save the last 30 or 60 seconds of video... it's been great during the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

It's very light weight and getting better every week.

I avoided using the mReplay online program since it was only internet explorer (IE and Beta anything is a recipe for disaster) but they now have it for Firefox and it works great.  It also remembers your Slingboxes saved to your mReplay account (kind of like web based email) so you can watch your Slingboxes on any computer without installing any Sling software.

I recorded my work computer (where I can't install any software) where I'm watching my Slingbox and also one of my friend's Slingbox.  I also did a record and uploaded it to the website (takes seconds unlike YouTube which takes forever).

Completely wrong advise there......

If you send the video and audio output thru a modulator and hook that into your existing cable TV stream you can then record from that. If you dont have cable TV the modulator can act as a single CAble TV channel...

Irdeto2engineer,
How does that resolve the issue of someone wanting to record from their SlingPlayer stream onto their Computer?

Have a Sansa device or MP3 player, then check out The latest!

It doesn't.

But there are other streaming devices like slings. One I am using the company has said in their next firmware release they will add remote recording. They already have recording to laptop on LAN.

Lan recording is done in Mpeg2 720 x 576 Res
