If you still have the beta installer you could always delete the ill fated official 1.0 release and reinstall the last beta though this may require setting the date back on your machine in order to run it. You can retrieve your favorites from your User/Preferences/Slingplayer Folder. There's only been one positive review of Slingplayer 1.0 thusfar. Hopefully we'll either see a quick revision of the latest release or a reissue of the last beta for those who need it until sling gets this worked out.
Hello,
After reading all the reviews of the new mac version I decided to hold off on the install. However, now when I open the slingplayer, I get the "slingplayer expired" message telling me to install the latest version. What do I do now if I want to keep using the old version? Has anyone had a positive experience with the new version?
Thanks,
Tim
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I no longer have the beta installer so I am going to take a leap of faith and install the new version. If it is as bad as everyone says they must put out an update fairly soon.
Remember, you hear from the people with problems for the most part. People that don't have problems don't generally post.
Also, they wouldn't have released it if the private beta hadn't been successful.
And, with it coming out of beta, it will be officially supported..
Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.
One wouldn't think they would release it if testing had not been successful but something must have been overlooked as those with problems who have posted are experiencing much the same anomalies. As far as i can tell there was no firmware update to accompany thie official 1.0 release, was there?
Well in reference to ryandh's comment about satisfied people not posting I just wanted to say that I installed the new version and it is not that bad. My slingplayer stuttered with the beta and it still stutters. I definitely do not see an improvement but I don't notice any major problems. Seems to work ok.
Let's see...MY computer, MY slingbox.
How about if I decide whether to change software version.
I deeply resent the way this was done.
As a new owner I wonder if I should be suggesting this system to my Pals.
MK
Well, i fully expect beta software to expire but i'm not a fan of the mandatory "check for updates". I usually turn the "check for updates" feature off in all of my software and would prefer the option to do so with slingplayer. Is there any other reason why slingplayer would need to phone home at start up?
Update to my above post:
Sling YOU SUCK completely!
I can NO LONGER REMOTE VIEW AND am away from home for 10 weeks ( the perfect scenario for sling to shine)
Now what do I do?
I can't run set up because I am not at home.
You have a responsibility to remedy this. It was working before you decided I needed new software.
Or do I have my wife box it and return it?
MK
Hey MK, relax. Did you ever think it might be that you are a new owner and have no idea what you are doing? Maybe you should have taken the instructions with you on your 10 week jaunt. Before you slam the company, why dont you put in a little effort to solve it yourself. Get a life...
Thanks, TomH, I appreciate your support and consideration.
We as Sling think it's great when everything works for most of our customers as is the case with the Mac SlingPlayer, but we really do feel bummed when some of our customers have these inexplicable problems which leave them high and dry.
More than just the developer of the Mac SlingPlayer, I'm also a customer too and I guarantee you that if my box stopped working with this update while I was away for months, I would also be rip-snorting fit to be tied and probably say so using words that make Jack Nicholson sound like Mr. Rogers. I have no problem with mkguitar there.
But I still don't think we merit the "sucks completely" sticker. What he hasn't said is that he's been in contact with our Customer Service multiple times; his issue has been investigated by both Basic and Senior CS reps; then two of our CS managers (both former Apple employees); our Beta Program Manager; the developer (me); and our VP of Marketing, for crying out loud. It's not like we're ignoring him.
I have his Slingbox ID (but no password), his real name, his email address, and not much info beyond that his box doesn't respond. According to CS, in addition to an SP 1.0 software problem, it could also be a coincidental router issue, a problematic SlingLink, or his pet rabbit nibbling on the ethernet cable. We're poised to help, but we're not magicians.
In fact we've all been just as busy this week monitoring the feedback and responding to issues like mkguitar's as we have been the preceeding weeks trying to actually get the 1.0 out. And despite this, we are still more bummed that mkguitar is stranded than being told that we completely suck.

I got a quick response from Sling on my problem.
And I appreciate that.
I have offered more information ( which is basically it worked the other day- now it does not).
The only change I am aware of is the software.
I expect that they will be as quick to resond again and that we can proceed, possibly to find a solution.
My dsl router at home is still connecting to the net. ( I have written the Actiontec support to see if I can access the set up mode remotely- in case changes there need to be made)
This is a product which is aimed at people who are not in the same location as the equipment.
And thanks for the advice Tom, I agree with all that you write -I do need a life- instead I watch too much TV! And perhaps I should carry manuals for every piece of equipment, appliance and vehicle I own.
again- Slingbox worked the other day with the previous sofware version- now it does not.

Another thing that can be handy, if you have a computer at home set up a remote control program so you can access your home network to work on things that are only accessible from the home network..
I must say that I've had the full attention of the People at Sling Media.
My spouse is very computer illiterate. I had her download the sling software onto my old mac, which she uses for email. She installed her 1st ever piece of software and I talked her through the set-up assistant.
It appears that the problem was in that the "remote viewing" needed to be turned on.
( is it possible that this changed happened when the software was upgraded?)
We found this solution on our own but I do appreciate the Sling Media response which included offering to call my home and assist with the set up.
I am now watching Entourage from the studio in which I am working near Windsor England-my box is in Phoenix.
