Though I am a strong supporter of the Slingbox, I also need to report that there is another competitor to Slingbox - "CyberLinkLive".  It is cabable of streaming content stored on your computer or from your TV Tuner card.  I don't know about CD's, DVD's, etc.  The quality (at least from my TV Tuner card) is not up to that of the Slingbox, but not bad either given that it is currently in Beta.  You are still (apparently) limited to a single user.  But then the cost is right - Free (and claims to always be so).

The server and details can be found at

Not necessarily a competitor but looks like it could be promising.  Says any web browser so will be interesting to see if it truly runs on anything.  Not much specific info that I saw.

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

There are several competitors to Sling - such as the Hava boxes and the Orb server for PCs. But none of them have all the the platform support of Sling, and they don't have the same features.

-MegaZone, Sling Media Beta Manager
Slingbox Pro, HD Connect, TiVo Series3, TiVo Pioneer DVR-810H, SPM Treo 680, SP WinXP
(I also run GizmoLovers.com)

I have continued to play with Cyberlinklive.  It has released at least two additional versions since my original post.  The quality of the video has improved since the original release.  I have not tried recording from the stream.

My PCs built-in tuner is adequate for watching TV locally, but it is darn right poor when used with the manufacturer supplied DVR software - the audio and video rapidly become out of sync and it only gets worse the longer the recording.

Tonight I am watching Cyberlinklive in the local Paneras as I am using Slingbox and the At-Large Recorder to capture a copy of I-Robot tonight.  The picture is comparable to the worst of what I see using Slingplayer - thought not the same quality as Slingplayer at its best.
