Guys,

I've discovered what I feel is a significant bug in SlingPlayer Mac 1.0. DO NOT -  I repeat DO NOT use "direct connection" settings for your Slingboxes.  Use the SlingFinder ID instead.  What will happen is that WAN based streaming sessions will work fine.  But when you bring your laptop into your LAN, the video and audio will be tremendously choppy and you'll never get the correct speed.

I have consistently made this happen over and over again this evening and so I am quite sure that this is 100% correct.  Perhaps it's my router setup but I'm not really set up any more special than anyone else.  I've also put my LAN IP into the direct connect field and everything works fine at that point.  So it appears that SPM 1.0 is not relying 100% on UPNP to make the connection work.

Jon,

It's good to hear you can repeat the problem reliably.

The way it's supposed to work for LAN connections is that the SlingPlayer simply sends out a broadcast on the local net and waits for Slingboxes to answer with their local IP address, which is then used to communicate with it directly. UPnP isn't involved in this as far as I know, nor are either of the settings for Slingbox ID or Direct Connect--they're only involved in WAN connections.

If you try to connect to a Slingbox that was saved in your preferences, but hasn't responded to the LAN broadcast, then we assume it's a remote (WAN) connection, and *then* we use the Slingbox ID or Direct Connect.

It sounds like in your case, the SlingPlayer may not be getting the response(s) from your Slingbox(es), so it's using the *public* IP in the Direct Connect field which may be a much slower route, hence the lower quality AV.  You note that when you put your LAN IP into the Direct Connect field, it works.  Aha.

However it doesn't explain why your WAN connections aren't equally low-quality, so I will have to mull this over some more (I'll have to mull, as we can't reproduce your problem here in Muppet Labs).

Steve, I know - it's strange. It looks to me like the broadcast works when the Finder ID method is checked. But doesn't when it's set up for direct connect. I just tried this on my MacPro. I've never messed with the settings since the MacPro is always on the LAN. But yep, sure enough. if I try to put in the direct IP, the same thing happens. Except it wsn't just choppy video, it completely froze (the video/audio - not the program). I'll check router settings to make sure that the broadcast packets aren't being blocked on the LAN, but my Slingboxes are showing up as local devices in the Slingbox Directory. So I don't think that's the problem... I wonder if anyone else out there can duplicate this or if I'm just an odd ball who has this problem... Jon

Hi Steve

I am also having problems with the direct connection method... It worked fine in the Mac Beta, but now when I try the direct connection, it says "starting stream" and then it never shows a picture. I am using a dyndns setup which always worked under the beta.

There are no problems using the Finder ID, this only happens on both my local mac mini and my macbook when using the direct connection. I have verified my port settings, etc.

Thanks for any assist you might have.

Palmfox, Does streaming remotely work? Is this problem ONLY on the LAN? If so, you have the same problem as I and I'm not crazy!

Hi NA9D

Streaming remotely does work using the Finder ID.. I cannot seem to get a connection using the Direct Connection. Both worked fine in the Beta version, but I cannot get any of my computers to connect using Direct Connection. No settings have been changed on the router, but it doesn't ever connect.

I can't do direct connection nor can I get my finder to work either UUUUhhhgg

OK, guys. The problem I'm explaining is NOT with remote connections - only when attempting to do a local (WAN) connection when having the direction connection specified. If your remote connections aren't working, it's generally due to a firewall/NAT issue.

Hi NA9D The direct connection is not working either via WAN or LAN.. I cannot give the player a local IP address and have it work on the LAN connection. I also cannot give it an external IP address with my port forward and have it work on a WAN connection... however using the Finder ID works both on the WAN and also on the LAN network... Firewall and NAT are not an issue. Everything was working fine with the Direct Connection under the Beta version of the software on BOTH the LAN and WAN. It has only been since I upgraded to the 1.0 version that the problem started.

Ah. Ok. I'm able to make WAN connections with Direct Connect but not local. Anyhow, seems like we have a very similar situation...
