OK, I'm excited that version 1.0 of SlingPlayer for Mac is out.

And (since the big iPhone Bash is rapidly approaching) I can't help wondering:

Does anyone know if iPhones are going to be SlingBox compatable?

Will the full iPhone screen be convertable to a TV?

Will the touch screen mean that the SlingBox onscreen remote can be fingered just like an on-the-couch remote?

No. Nothing has been made public about any SlingPlayer client for the iPhone. For that matter there is very little information on ANY third party software. Apple has stated that they plan to not let there be open development on the phone and that they will control the applications.

In addition the 1st Gen iPhone is a GPRS/Edge phone which means that it is not a 3G phone and as such, the data rates are barely acceptable for streaming.

still the pressure on them will be strong.

How cutting edge can the iPhone claim be if it locks out TV and TiVo?

imagine how cool the following remote would be on an iPhone:

The iPhone is not cutting edge in all ways anyway - as was said, it is EDGE for data. No UMTS or HSDPA, so it isn't 3G. Apple is more about design and user experience than being bleeding edge on tech. And they have iTunes - they'll want you to get your TV and video from ITMS.

hell, for 500 - 600 dollars without tax, these little mini computers that are wifi are pretty cool, but not so cool that I'd buy one if it didn't support my slingy.  I live in San Francisco, and we will be a free citywide wifi city in the coming months.  Can you imagine all the exposure that slingbox would get if they could finagle something with apple?  hell, the companies are right down the street from each other.

Nevertheless, don't you think your eyes would kill after about 2 minutes of watching on this size screen?

My eyes kill whenever I view remotely anyway, but Im told this issue is still being worked on for the 1.0 version.  6 weeks later, and somehow, I still have patience and faith that these issues will be ironed out soon.  And for all the beta testers here, thanks for your input, but the companies customer service phone support has stated repeatedly that the problems are due to changing from beta to 1.0, and as such, the knowledge base from beta users, while appreciated, rarely fixes anything.  Please don't take this the wrong way, you guys ROCK!

Hi, icculus -

1. We appreciate your loyalty.
2. No one finagles anything with Apple.  Period.
3. Foster City is miles and miles from Cupertino. Not that it would matter :-)
4. Being worked on for the post-1.0 version
5. This is  the Public Mac forum, some of the posters are/were
beta testers but all posters are our customers.
6. There is no point 6.
7. More than any other single element, what our customers
have to say influences what gets fixed.
8. Customer Service may not know this yet.  But they will.
9. Yes, our customers do. Rock, that is.

p.s. Try using the HD port on your Pro only for LAN streaming.  Use another port (S-Video or Composite) connected to the same source as whatever you have the HD port connected to for when you want to stream remotely.  You'll find that the remote-viewing picture quality is better that way.

Hi, Steve, Actually, I think the simplest way to sling to iPhones (short of an agreement between Apple and Slingmedia) would be for you to get out of the standalone application mode and come out with a browser-based client. The advantages would be cross-platform and wider compatibility (including Safari on iPhones and other future mobile internet devices) as well as likely fewer support questions... Stan in Brooklyn

Does today's WWDC announcement about being able to develop apps for iPhone increase the likelihood that it'll be slingable at some point?

June 11, 2007 4:29 PM

Well, the announcement simply is that applications will be able to run INSIDE Safari. So the Applications must be Web 2.0 compatible. Beyond that, there is no separate API for 3rd party apps. So far, SlingMedia has not developed a web based application for the SlingPlayer. This would be a good way and a good reason to do so. Once Apple comes out with the 3G iPhone and SlingMedia with a Safari based player, I'd probably buy one. Until that point - probably not.

Part of me agrees that it would make sense to wait for 3G and an AJAX SlingPlayer before trading in my Treo 700p for an iPhone, but I don't use my smartphone as a sling interface nearly as much as I use it for web browsing, placing calls, texting, and checking weather, movie showtimes, etc. As much as I love my Slingbox, I spend more time using my iPod than I do watching my Sling Player, because even with a 3G connection on the Treo, slung videos stutter and break up when I'm traveling on buses & trains, which never happens on an ipod. My smartphone is alot of things only one of which is the slingplayer. Everything else, the iPhone just does better. It's a no brainer, but I will miss it. I hope SlingMedia can find a solution to port it into Ajax. It really would make for the ultimate handheld.

June 12, 2007 7:18 PM

There is no way to code SlingPlayer in AJAX - AJAX itself doesn't do video. AJAX is Asynchronous JavaScript And XML. To handle video you need a plug-in like Flash Player, Silverlight, Quicktime, etc. The iPhone has video functionality, and Apple claims that you'll be able to write iPhone Safari AJAX applications that can use proprietary extensions to hook into built-in phone functions like dialing, Google Maps, etc. *If* they provide a hook into Quicktime, which is in the iPhone, then *maybe* it would be possible to write a player as an AJAX app. But Sling uses VC-1/WMV9 as their codec, so the iPhone will need to support that as well - or the Slingbox would need to support MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, which is what Apple standardized on.

Hey guys take a look to this, it looks like Apple is not going to allow third party application for the Iphone, check it at:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36919

That is an old article from Jan...Job's announced plans for allowing 3rd party developers in June:

http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/0...

"Jobs told an enthusiastic audience at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2007 in San Francisco that developers could write applications that work and look like iPhone applications from Apple, including those for making calls, sending e-mail, and other functions."

Developers will be able to create applications for the iPhone by using Web 2.0 programming tools such as AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) and taking advantage of the full version of Apple's Safari Web browser incorporated into the devices. A separate, special software developer kit is not needed, Jobs said.

Hi Steve, Since "More than any other single element, what our customers have to say influences what gets fixed," we want an iPhone Slingplayer! Video in landscape is great on this screen. I know there are technical problems but... Thanks in advance...

Hello! I too am anxious for an iPhone Slingplayer. I love the phone, but had to give up slinging on my Treo 750. Thanks also........

July 10, 2007 5:10 PM

I don't think that it's an issue of SlingMedia not wanting to do it. I think that users here who want an iPhone player need to contact Apple. Post such message on Apple message boards, write the company, call them, etc. Ask them to either open up the phone or work with SlingMedia. The bottom line is that NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING is going to happen unless Apple allows it and it needs to be addressed with them...

As usual, Jon knows of what he speaks. The ability to sling from my phone is the #1 thing i miss having with my new iPhone.

Slingin' on my 17" intel iMac, 15" Macbook Pro and Palm Treo 700p!

Between inability to Sling and the lack of an internet radio streaming ability, I killed my desire for the iPhone. I could do w/o being able to Sling since I have a data card now on my laptop. But not being able to use internet radio is what definitely killed it. I tend to use that a lot when I take walks, etc.

It wll be compatible only if SlingMedia uses Apple's SDK available in February 2008.   When will SlingMedia/DISH start accepting beta user applications?????

Well slowly it looks like AT&T is moving into 3Gif this helps. http://www.electronista.com/articles/...

October 18, 2007 2:36 PM

AT&T has had 3G for some time in certain areas of the country. That's not why the iPhone isn't 3G. It's not 3G because at present the efficiencies for long battery life are not there in the 3G chipsets. They are getting better. And I think Edge would work fine. I use my Treo 700W on Verizon here and most of the time I stream, the network gives me between 150k and 250k and the stream is fine. Sometimes it's up to 400 to 500 k but I think Edge can get up to about 384k maximum and that's plenty sufficient for a small screen...
