I have a Linksys 2.4 GHz 802.11b multi port. Is this thing junk? What do you guys think about Belkin?

My laptop keeps dropping the signal. My nre house has lots of nooks and crannies. Should I get a new router? And if so whart specs should it have?

Another question.... Does the router quality affect/effect teh image. Because the Slinbox tuner remote sgnal really sucks.

Should I bite the bullet and purchase the SB Pro.?

Thanks in advance....Smile

802.11b? Trash it. That's not fast enough for decent slinging, you need 802.11g. 11b has a theoretical max speed of 11Mbps, but you're lucky to average half of that. 11g has a theoretical max speed of 54Mbps, and you can usually sustain better than half of that. 11g gear also tends to have a longer range, and generally supports WPA security. WPA is actually secure, as opposed to WEP, which most 11b devices are limited to, which is worthless.

Don't bother with the so-called '802.11n' devices, 802.11n isn't finalized yet - they're really 'Pre-N' and may not be compatible with the final spec, no matter what they claim. But you need all of your devices to support 11g to take advantage of it - and 11g router and an 11b laptop are limited to 11b performance. And yes, the sling stream will be restricted by network performance. More speed generally means a better image.

Sorry but 802.11b is more than enough to sling with..  Even if you only getting a 1mb transmit rate.. this is more then enough to sling with for a watchable picture.  Optimal - maybe not, but watchable yes.

Remote viewing works on 256-384kbit up.. an your saying even if we cut 802.11b bandwidth in 1/4 2mb is not enough? Yeah OK.

Yes there is quite a bit of overhead in wifi, that does mean its not useable for slinging. 11mbit will normally get you somewhere between 4 and 5.5mbit.. This is clearly more than enough for a decent sling.

Now is this what the poster is getting - have no idea.  But in general B is more then enough to sling by.

What sucks about the picture? More than likely its the fact your pulling it off broadcast?  Or some RF input?  you have the tuner sling..  Yeah analog off the the air broadcast do suck ;) The does not mean your picture quality is related to your network bandwidth.

But I would agree that G will give you more bandwidth, an better picture an response than B.. An as stated you should be able to move to a decent encryption method. WPA2 is the current standard.

I would also agree, unless you have a SPECIFIC current imediate need for the bandwith can bring - I would stay away from the n devices until final.
