802.11b? Trash it. That's not fast enough for decent slinging, you need 802.11g. 11b has a theoretical max speed of 11Mbps, but you're lucky to average half of that. 11g has a theoretical max speed of 54Mbps, and you can usually sustain better than half of that. 11g gear also tends to have a longer range, and generally supports WPA security. WPA is actually secure, as opposed to WEP, which most 11b devices are limited to, which is worthless.
Don't bother with the so-called '802.11n' devices, 802.11n isn't finalized yet - they're really 'Pre-N' and may not be compatible with the final spec, no matter what they claim. But you need all of your devices to support 11g to take advantage of it - and 11g router and an 11b laptop are limited to 11b performance. And yes, the sling stream will be restricted by network performance. More speed generally means a better image.
