I was spying around today and came across a very interesting little device. It said Slingbox on it and it was hooked up to cable. I was sad to see it didn't have an HDMI port on it and that it wasn't QAM enabled, but I like the concept and strategy. The form factor was also nice. Maybe a bit flatter than one would expect. No idea if it's got a firewall or anything router like inside. The interesting thing about this play is that because the slinging is ahead of any router it may reduce some headaches for internet connectivity and open up some interesting add-on services that might otherwise be difficult to have behind a firewall...but that's just speculation... :)
Saw it where? Pictures??
Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.
I know I'm missing your point here, so what do you mean that the Sling is ahead of the router?
Do you mean that the Sling stream would be controlled directly by the cableco, without need of a LAN?
Thanks.
I really don't have a point. I just observed the device. The Slingbox has a built in cable modem. Like other cable modems there is a LAN connection that you might use to connect to your PC. If you are familiar with cable modems they are ahead of the router on your connection to the internet. I said nothing of 'control' by a cableco. I suspect a consumer would purchase this device at retail.
Sounds like a SlingCatcher to me :)

Sounds like a SlingBox Tuner to me.. Cable input for the tuner, Ethernet for connectivity...

No tuning as far as I could tell. It's a cable modem. The ethernet is for the lan if you need one.

Interesting. 2008 CES has a "SlingModem" on display and Engadget has pictures. Not much more than that though.

Wow, I didn't think it would take 7 months for this to see the light of day :)
Modem looks like the finished product we reported on back in August.

If you live in the Bay Area and your ISP starts with a C and ends with omcast there is a chance you will get to see one up close and personal....in 2008.

Ya, there is definitley a SM and C omcast connection. Will be interesting to see how it plays out with the Echostar buy out.
Maybe Matt can get some info at CES.

The comment by LLANDAR on the Gizmodo post occurred to me also. If cable providers start making this device available and charge for it (much like they do the DVRs), why would I do that when I can use a router like I do today and own a SB? I don't think this is good news at all. Aside from the cable companies charging for something I essentially get for free today (no monthly charges), I think it also would give them an opportunity to mess with my sling stream (knowing what I sling, adding ads, etc. etc. How is this device good for us?

Tom,
I think you make a lot of negative and paranoid delusional assumptions. You MUST have cable :)
You aren't the target market if you own a sling box and already have a cable modem.
You might want to wait and see the details of the offering before "calling it out".
Paranoid, perhaps..but it would be delusional to think that cable companies aren't going to charge more for this than they do for an ordinary modem. Wait and see point taken though.
