This router is extremely old and does not show up on the list of routers when setting up the slingbox. However, when it comes time to try and connect to the slingbox through a remote connection when first setting it up, it does not connect. However, I know that i set up the port forwarding just fine, and I was wondering if not selecting the proper router in the beginning could be the cause of the remote connection being unable to pick up the slingbox. I ask this only because I know that my port forwarding was done correctly and if there could be any other problems causing the unsuccessful detection.

There could be a firewall or something at the remote location causing the problem.

When you ran the setup and it tested remote viewing did it succeed??

Where are you trying to connect from?  Its quite possilbe they block outbound on 5001.  Have seen many many times before, users actually have 2 NAT devices daisy chained.. So they setup the forward on one of the devices - but still blocked because of the other device, etc.

Are you trying to connect directly to your public IP, or trying to use finderID?

There are many, many reasons why you could be having problems.

Well, I'm connecting from home and have an ftp set up, so I know that port forwarding is possible. My current setup is this router with a linksys hub, but I've still been successful opening ports the way that I have been. When I tested the remote viewing, it did not succeed, and that is where I have been getting stuck.

nonenone,

Here's something that might help you determine if the port is properly configured, or if it is reachable:

First, figure out what IP your router is currently assigned from your ISP (easily determined by accessing the router config).  Then, from outside your network, open a DOS window on a PC.  Issue the following command:

telnet [ip address] 5001

If you get a blank, black screen, the request is getting through.  The device that the request was routed to (presumeably the SB) doesn't know what to do with the request, but it is getting through.  If the request doesn't go through, you should get a message saying something like, "Could not open connection to the host, on port 5001: Connect failed"

Unfortunately, the ping command doesn't support specific ports, or I would have suggested that command instead.

Hope this helps.

Well I tried this, but it does not say the could not open a connection. It says the connection times out. Is this because the port was not properly configured?

While I am not 100% certain of this, I believe that anything other than "Could not open connection to host, on port 5001: Connect failed" is a good sign that the port actually IS configured correctly.  The timeout likely just means  that the SB doesn't know what to do with a telnet request.  To test further, try telnet to another port, such as 5099.  You should get the msg above.
