Look anywhere on the Internet, and given the amount of press coverage, you'd mistake today for a national holiday. Did you know? It's iDay! Did you put up your iTree and send your iDay cards to your loved ones?

So the iPhone will be available later tonight, and though it has a touch screen interface and integrated iPod music player, it lacks something nearly any mobile Slinger needs... SlingPlayer.

So here's a few iDay questions, focused squarely on the Slingers of the world:

Is a version of SlingPlayer for iPhone something that will never happen, given the AJAX requirement for all third party software and lack of high-speed data? Or, is a version of SlingPlayer an inevitability?

Are you a current Slinger lining up to get one, despite the inability to connect it to your Slingbox?

What do you think of the iPhone? Hottest thing since sliced bread, or overhyped and overpriced?

I will seriously consider getting an iPhone when it meets all 3 of the following criteria -

 1) When it is 3G enabled (or as an alternative, WiMax exists in my area)

 2) When there is a SlingPlayer for the iPhone

 3) When I can sync with my corporate email.

Until it does all of these 3 things, I am not budging and am sticking with my Blackjack.

Even when it meet all of this criteria a few months down the road, I may opt for a HTC Shift UMPC or similar device instead.

I had an HTC device and I would suggest that you stay with your Blackjack. It crashed more then Lindsay Lohan. I've never tried the blackjack, but other then the appalingly low battery life, I've never heard anything bad about it.

I am running a blackberry 8800, and I too miss slinging, but all three of TampaBlackJack's criteria must be met for me to get the iphone. Until this happens, it's really just an over-priced toy.

When and if all of those 3 things happen, I will be 1st in line.

A SlingPlayer for the iPhone will sell SLINGBOXES by the 100s.

I will be buying an iPhone...definitely 2nd generation if I'm able to resist. If I could Sling to it I personally know of a dozen non-Slingers who are either in line now to buy an iPhone or will have one before the end of next week (if Apple has made enough of them to hold out that long) who will order a SlingBox to use with it. This particularly considering that AT&T has pulled some magic out of that old EDGE network and cranked it up to 200mbs. If there's not a Sling/Apple deal done or in the works, Sling is...well, let's just say that would be a HUGE missed opportunity.

I bought my current Windows Mobile PPC mainly for Slingbox and Skype, two apps that don't appear on the iPhone. So, no iPhone for me.

The iPhone is a waste of everything... I don't ever expect to buy one and I'd  bet serious money there will never be a sling player for it unless Apple buys Sling Media.

I have a Cingular 8525 (aka HTC TyTn, Hermes...) and yes, it's very unstable stock from Cingular, BUT, using 3rd party developers from XDA and Win4Mobile, the 8525 is the best all around PPC/Phone I've ever used.  I'm now running WM6 Professional and the phone is rock solid.

So now it supports 3.5G blazing fast internet speeds. It supports the new 4+gig Micro SDHC memory cards.  It supports many excellent GPS nav apps with REAL talking navigation.  It supports TCPMP the finest video player around.  It has a removeable battery.  It has a slide out qwerty keyboard.

It supports Sling better that anything I've tried so far.

The iPhone.....not so much, OK it's pretty, much like the Newton :)

And in August it's successor the "Kaiser" or (I've heard aka AT&T 8925) has a 3MP Auto-Focus Camera PLUS a built-in GPS receiver.  To top it all it's even thinner than the 8525 and the display slides and folds up like a mini desktop PC.  I will have that Phone.

Is it true that it doesn't even have voice dialing?  If so, I'll not only avoid the iPhone, but also drivers trying to call their Uncle Qwerty on their way to work.

The older I get, the better I was.

A 3G iPhone is coming. I can't tell you how I know this, but I know it for a fact.
The iPhone won't do WiMax - it does WiFi.

SlingMedia could easily do an Ajax version of its player. In fact, it's what a lot of people have been wanting.

You can do corporate e-mail if your company supports IMAP or POP3 protocols. Most Exchange servers can have those enabled.

This device will evolve quite a bit...

Slinging with a Slingbox Pro, a Slingbox Solo and a Slingbox Classic. 3 Replay TV units, a Roku HD1000 Photobridge and a Roku M2000 Soundbridge, an AppleTV, a Vudu, and digital cable. www.na9d.net

I'me sure it will, and since you can't remove the battery, I'm sure all the users will evolve as well, as they'll be replaceing them annually.

Don't get me wrong, it's very pretty and the GUI is simply beautiful, but after opening a few pics, scrolling a few albums, I'm done with the good looks. No stylus and the qwerty is smallish to use for any qty of entry.

Edit,  I actually played with one for a while and I think that folks who have PPCs will be underwhelmed, I could not "work" (as in do my job) with it, notes and to-do's don't sync to anything, no voice dialing, no removeable sim card....

BUT, to stay on topic, I saw many people, mainly ones that can't "even use all the features in my Razr" go gaga over this thing.  Here in Southern Calif, they're sold out at all the Cingular stores and even the largest Apple stores around.  So I do believe that they will sell a ton of these, not to people like me, but still a ton.  Every rich kid will have one before school starts, mark my words, it's the uber iPod.

I think Sling should absolutely support the iPhone, but it doesn't allow ANY 3rd party apps to be installed currently.

I would love to have an iphone unless the Kaiser that REM mentions blows me away.  I am pleased with my 8125, but is still cloogey to use. The EDGE network's speed does not bother me so much and since I am only paying $20 a month for the data services I am going to stay with it for as long as I can. I am not inclined to fork over another $20 a month for 3G. However, I am at least going to wait until the 2nd generation iphone is available.

I would have to say that given Apple's loyal followers and the large 3.5 screen, that a slingplayer for iphone is inevitable, but it might be a year away at least.

Even without the iphone, a sling player that runs in AJAX that I can run from any computer's browser without having to  install the software would be very cool.

I hope Apple will open their iPhone to 3rd party vendors. iPhone and SlingPlayer would make a winning combination.

EDGE is the only data coverage in my area. It works good enough for a nice video stream on my Cingular 8525. 3G would be better but Edge works surprisingly well.

July 3, 2007 11:37 AM

Since the iPhone operating system is Mac OSX, can't the Slingplayer for Mac 1.0 be downloaded onto the iPhone?

July 5, 2007 1:57 PM

I have the iPhone and it's great.

HOpe they come out with a firmware update to allow for 3G. also Would love a slingbox client.  it would work awesome on wifi for it.

to the naysayers, the iphone is better than all those Windows mobile devices which crash a ton.  Namely HTC and more.

please support iphone. it would be a killer client device

There is no firmware that will enable 3G...it is hardware that is required.  Apple decided to go EDGE because they didn't want to use the 3G chips due to power consumption.  Perhaps Version 2 of the phone, but the current iPhone will never be 3G.

July 7, 2007 12:18 PM

I love my iPhone, but I doubt there will ever be a Slingplayer for it. REM the SIM card on the iPhone is removable.

July 7, 2007 3:59 PM

I'll also vote for slingplayer on the iPhone. The iPhone has by far the best user interface of any phone I've tried. It may not (yet) have all the features of some smart phones, but all of its features are easily accessible without having to refer to a manual. The screen resolution is great so watching video in landscape mode is a joy.

July 8, 2007 3:56 PM

I haven't received my Iphone yet (ordered onine - not a waiting in line type) and I would really like to see the Sling player available for the Iphone. Has Sling commented on this posibility yet? The TIVO\Sling\Iphone combination would be killer since I will always have the Iphone with me as opposed to access to TIVO\Sling\PC.

Inevitable, but it'll take a while I'm sure.

I've been playing with several third party on my iPhone this week. We just need an accidental release of an iphone version of slingplay. Whadaya say guys?lf somebody knows of an unofficial copy flying around, email me. Get your iPhones folks.

October 9, 2007 9:39 PM

Ashame if it NEVER happens. No slingplayer is the ONLY reason I have not purchased this phone. I will stick with PPC until this changes.
