So I jumped on the Woot! deal for a couple of Slingbox classics to pair up with my 2 Dish PVR's (a 501 and a 721).  I saw that both were supported and figured that it would be spectacular to be able to access either of them from anywhere.

 Goodness, I was so naive.

Well it seems that Sling never thought that customers would want to do this because there is no provision to set the remote address for any of the RF+IR equipped Dish PVRs.  And since having 2 RF Dish PVR's on the same frequency/IR encoding is a recipe for disaster, Dish allows you to change that.

So I have a very happily working Slingbox & Dish PVR 501 combination.  Not surprising since the 501 is on the default remote address.

UNforturnately, my second Slingbox & Dish PVR 721 combination is not so happy.  After hours of testing and swapping hardware between the two configurations, pulling my hair out, cursing Sling and Dish, I know EXACTLY what the problem is.  I need to figure out some way to get a DVR 721 key map that uses the "Other -> Code 7" protocol.  I just don't know how to do that.

Info taken from the Sys Info tab on the Dish PVRs:
  Dish PVR 501 - Remote Address - 1   (DEFAULT)
Dish PVR 721 - Remote Address - 11 (NOT DEFAULT)

Is what I want to do so out of this world that I need to waste 2 days of my life becoming an expert at how all of this works, spend 45 frustrating minutes with a tech support agent in India that is reading from her manual, then spend 30 minutes on the phone with a more helpful tech support agent in India who claims that he will try to escalate to engineering who should be able to fix this in about 2 minutes.

I've seen about a half dozen posts from other people fighting this problem in the forums.  I spent 3 hours trying to get 'RM' to do what I wanted.  This is ridiculous.

Why on earth does Sling not provide an easy to use file generator for people to be able to (re)program their remotes when necessary?

I assume if you set them both on 1 the RF controls both??

Is there another code besides 11 that the Slingbox can use?

Do you needthe RF?  Can you turn it off and use the same code?

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

Yes, if I set them both to 1 then yes, both DVR's receive the commands from the remote and attempt to perform the action.

The RF can not be turned off. We wouldn't actually want that since when we are not at the computer, we can watch the output of either DVR on any TV in the house.

Edit Add:  I really am surprised that Sling didn't think of this possibility.  Hard coding values in encrypted configuration files always ends up biting someone in the butt.  Just wish it wasn't me.  Laughing

Thanks for the response!

After two more calls to Sling's technical support and talking to supervisors, I'm quite disappointed in their inability to handle obvious situations like this.

Not having the ability to easily learn from a remote is ridiculous for the first generation product and software, let alone the third or fourth. Looking through the forums, I see dozens of complaints about not being able to control devices. Multiply that by the hundreds since so few people that buy the devices ever join forums and there is a real problem here.

Yet another neat device crippled by poor managerial priorities.

Sling and Dish Network have fixed this issue, for when the customer has two DVR's and Two Sling Boxes.

Dish Network needs to update their Level 3 tech support with the following information to provide to future customers with multiple Slingboxes and multiple Dish Network DVR's.

On your DVR #2 remote control, press "Menu" then "6", "1", "3".

Line # "i" will likely show: "Remote Address: 2". (Remember this)

Now launch your Slingplayer on your local PC.

Pull down the "Slingbox" menu and select: "Properties"

Click on the tab labeled: "Slingbox configuration".

Click on the "Change" button that is just to the right of the title: "Audio/Video Setup"

Make the proper selections for your device until you get to the page titled: "Device Model".

Instead of selecting Dish 510 (or whatever your DVR Receiver is) find the selection at the top titled: "Dish Remote 2".

Hope this helps you.
