First I had a 700wx and slingbox looked awesome on it.

Just exchanged to a Mogul by HTC. Slingbox looks like crap on it. It's all distorted and pixelated.  The only differences I can think of is The moguls screen is bigger, and it uses WM6. The 700wx is WM5.  I am using the 30 day trial on it.  I was going to buy it, but now I don't think I will.

Anyone with the same experience?

Hey there! I concur....this Sling windows mobile player looks like crap... I'm using it on a TELUS Mobility p4000 in Canada (same device as the Sprint Mogul..only difference being it runs WM 5) That said I believe it has NOTHING to do with network connection speed... the network connection is EVDO REV 0 for now until they release a REV A EVDO firmware for the device.. The reason I am confident it is NOT network speed related is... if I tether up to my MacBook Pro laptop and use my TELUS Mobility p4000 phone as a modem network connection I get picture quality as good as if I was at home watching it on the LAN.... streaming statistics while tethered indicate 750+ Kbps So I will rule out network connection speeds as an issue... even if I use the wifi connection the picture quality is not great on my p4000 or my Dell Axim x51v.... on my home lan....however if I watch it again on the laptop on the Mac or PC laptops its fine... I am using the SlingStream optimized mode....and I've also tried manual settings... Comments from Treo users always seem to indicate great quality... in particular I'm wondering even though it is the Windows mobile on all these device...it the actual app optimized a certain way for the Treo series of phones... I know the p4000/Mogul uses a dual core processor 400mhz for PDA functions and 133mhz for the mobile phone portion...but it is not the usual Xscale series processor...and Dell Axim x51v has a 624mhz Bulverde Xscale processor on it.. I'm hoping this software greatly improves in future generations .. cheers

Are you sure you aren't just seeing resolution issues ?

IIRC, the Treo has a screen resolution of 240x240 and a Mogul has 320x240. You will get the best and sharpest image when the streamed resolution is equal to the screen resolution such that there is a 1:1 pixel correspondence (between the video resolution at the screen pixels).

Go to Menu>Player Options>Encoding and play with the video resolution. On my SPM (on a Dash), I see resolutions of 224x176 and 320x240. The first would be good for "windowed" viewing, the second for full screen viewing. Of course you also need to have sufficient bandwidth to support high quality encoding at the given resolution (and of course, the higher the resolution, the higher the bandwidth needed). The treo 700wx should not be used at 320x240 obviously, but the Mogul should be like the Dash, and best at 224x176 also in windowed mode.

Play with these settings and you may find that you can improve the quality of the image significantly.

Unfortuately it has not seemed to help...in the settings area...it was checked marked auto resolution mode....it had 224x176 already selected... :(

Bandwidth in my particular case is not going to be the issue...as again the same device tethered to my Macbook Pro being used phone as modem provides 750+ Kbps with no problems using the SlingPlayer Max OS X version.

Any futher suggestions would greatly be appreciated!

thx again!

Uncheck auto-res and make your own settings... And set your own bandwidth. If you really have 750kbs available, set the bandwidth to at least 500kbs. Also play with the "action" setting.

Maybe you have a CPU utilization issue... Are you sure nothing else is running ? There's always the overclock the CPU game, but it shouldn't be necessary...

Hey Monkeyboy....

thanks for the assistance it is greatly appreciated...

The setting is working much better for wifi on both the p4000 and the Dell Axim...

However it is not improving the connection when using the mobile data connection.... it's hard to say... I'm really beginning to feel it is the application not utilizing the bandwidth correctly...cause again the same device tethered to a laptop and using data connection phone as modem gives me 750+ Kbps speeds and is totally awesome when remote viewing...but if using the actual Windows Mobile Sling app on the device.. it seems its not pulling in more of the avail bandwidth via mobile connection on the device itself.

hmmmm...for comparison...I'm gonna download the trial on my friends Treo 700wx on the same network ....and give it a go just to see if it acts any differently on the Treo device...

If you do have any more ideas feel free! .... as I really don't want to get the Treo!

to further update... I think it is related to CPU utilization as you mentioned earlier... I discovered that if I have the phone portion turned on the device and use wi-fi connection to use sling box...it is very sluggish still... I can confirm the SlingPlayer is running off the wi-fi as the data transfer for network connection is not active... upon turning off the phone mode....wi-fi streams in at 30fps at around 400+ Kbps.... but off course this still does not help me using the data connection of the network instead of wi-fi. So it just may be the hardware is the limiting issue in this case....not sure still... gonna tinker around with it some more..

i think its the codecs and the video quality (lack of) on the mogul.  Other videos i play in wmp or core player look bad too.  returning my slingbox tomorrow.  only bought it to watch shows on my phone.. blah

July 9, 2007 5:57 AM

I have no problems playing video using coreplayer... one thing though...under video preferences make sure its not using 'directdraw' in the video output option....oherwise the video will look awful and freeze...I put mine on GDi and videos look great... but this doesnt resolve the problem with SlingPlayer though :(

July 9, 2007 11:08 AM

Hey all....i can now confirm the issue is CPU related... i loaded the app on a UTStarcomm 6700 and it works flawless! the htc p4000/mogul uses the Qualcomm 7500 CPU... I hope the folks at Sling incorporate some sort of optimization for this CPU...as i really dont want to go back to using a 6700 again :( lol cheers all also works flawless on the Treo 700wx and moto Q... of course the CPU is not the Qualcomm one in those.

My Mogul works fine with the Classic.  I am in an EVDO area.

Only gripe I have is that it can't rotate the screen to the same side as the keyboard.  I let Dave Z. know of this issue.

Yep, we're looking into bigdaddy's screen orientation issue but I don't have any info to provide at this time. It'd be really nice if Sling would provide me a Mogul for "testing." ;)

Hi Dave.... I have also tried the app on a HTC s720 and same issues using the sling pro on this device (they both use the Qualcomm cpu 7500) thnx for looking into this in advance! cheers!

July 14, 2007 10:33 PM

also just to note....the SlingPlayer plays fine if I use it as a phone as modem connection through Bluetooth from the HTC p4000/6800/Mogul and to my Dell Axim x51v (using a 624mhz Xscale processor)...so it really has to be CPU related on the p4000 (Qualcomm 7500 CPU)..as stream rates are awesome using the networks connection via BT..... looking forward to some more findings from others... and any updates from Sling :)

One thing that may help.  When I got my Mogul, I did a hard reset immediately and then before the phone loaded all the sprint custimization materials, I soft reset the phone.  My guess is that these things may be causing the issue as maybe they are bogging down the processor???

I was using my Mogul all weekend and was routinely connecting at or above 250kbs with a fairly high frame rate.  250kbs gives a great picture and really only a few seconds off the live telecast.

Dave:  I am the same guy who sent you the email a few weeks back.

When you tether your phone to your laptop as a modem you get true EVDO speeds.  However when you are only using your phone to view the slingbox (or do any type of data transfering) the phone works under a *compressed* format and you will only see 250K at best.  I'm not 100% on the reason, but believe that this may be due to the limited processing power & limited physical memory on most of these devices.  Unpacking, decoding & displaying the 1200K I get on my laptop normally on a mobile phone might be too much to handle.

When you set your phone to tether as a modem however everything is different.  In this scenario your phone is just a dumb modem passing on information - hence the higher speeds.

I would believe that scenario.... HOWEVER on the other devices i've tested ie Treo 700wx (evdo) Moto Q (evdo) and UTStarcom 6700 (evdo) all on the TELUS network all display speeds in sling player show upwards of 450Kbps when using sling player... never the less the problem wih slingplayer only happens with device using the Qualcomm 7500 cpu ie the TELUS HTC p4000 and the TELUS HTC s720 I really just may end up going to the 6700 because of this...or I may tough it out and wait and see if a next generation of the player helps... also the SAME issue occurs on the p4000 when using wi-fi.... so it has to cpu usage related ..again I'm hoping more people with these devices advise of there experience...

Last night, I got home and ran some tests with Slingplayer Mobile and my Mogul.

Connected to Sprint PCS EVDO with excellent signal strength, it started out at 250kbs and over 5 minutes, was up to around 450-500kbs.  That was the best I have seen to date.  The picture looked incredible.

Connected to my WIFI at our house, it started out at 450kbs and topped out at around 800kbs+.  Again the picture looked great.

I've had a Sprint PPC6700, a sprint Treo 700wx and a Verizon XV6700 (which of the 4 phones was the slowest due to Verizons slow broadband speeds).  All performed with SPM around the same.  All of these phones were "hacked" to eliminate all the sprint and verizon "crap" that they package with the phone.

As you can guess, I am thrilled with the Mogul.  With some tweaks, it can go from a mediocre device to a superstar worldbeater.  If you want to see some tweak ideas, PPCGEEKS.com is an awesome resource (look under HTC Titan)

like many people i recently updated from the 6700 to the Mogul.  on the 6700 the slingplayer worked flawlessly.  however, i can't seem to get things working perfectly on the slingplayer even when averaging 350kbps on evdo.  there are always voice sync issues with the voice usually being about a second behind what is streaming video wise.  anyone having similar problems?  its not a speed issue, as my connection is fast enough.  has anyone found optimal settings to get slingplayer working great on the mogul?

right now i have optimization and fast start on.  i have auto resolution outpout on as well, basically all default settings.   the biggest issue for me is the sync issue which drives me insane.

Same problem.. Looked fine on ppc-6700, now on mogul it looks bad.. And this is the only app I installed too. Very disapointing :(

Oh, and I don't have the pro, I have the classic, I guess.
