New Mogul rom on the 22nd? Maybe a fix embedded in that?
Categories: Smartphone / PocketPC
First I had a 700wx and slingbox looked awesome on it.
Just exchanged to a Mogul by HTC. Slingbox looks like crap on it. It's all distorted and pixelated. The only differences I can think of is The moguls screen is bigger, and it uses WM6. The 700wx is WM5. I am using the 30 day trial on it. I was going to buy it, but now I don't think I will.
Anyone with the same experience?

The article has an update that says January or February is more likely for the release. Custom ROMs are being written, taking bits and pieces from the Alltel model. Maybe that could help.
I'm having the same probs.
I went from a 700wx to a mogul and my slingbox looks like CRAP!
I'm very disappointed. Sling was one of the "gotta-have" applications!
I have no doubt that the issues are with the Mogul's software and it's not SlingMedia's fault. However adding some features to SlingPlayer could make up for this. TCPMP is a popular video player for Palm and Windows Mobile and playback sucks on the Mogul with default settings. Video is choppy and audio is out of sync. However changing the video driver setting from DirectDraw to either Raw FrameBuffer or GDI virtually eliminates video issues. Add the fact that you can change the AV offset so sync issues are gone as well. If these two features were added to SlingPlayer, I'm confident it work just as well on the Mogul as it does on other devices.
The information I've been able to gather from Sprint's internal resources is now pointing to January for the ROM update. I've seen nothing that indicates Sprint or HTC are aware of the video issues, but problems with alarms, Bluetooth, etc., are all acknowledged and are supposed to be rolled into that update. It bothers me that the video trouble isn't mentioned.
Well, the ROM update was released last night, but nothing was mentioned about video issues.
This ROM update provides several key fixes for your Mogul:
Has anyone who has been having SlingPlayer issues with their Mogul run the update yet? I'm waiting until the weekend since I'll probably be reinstalling everything from scratch.
I have applied the update and, not surprisingly, it makes no difference to Slingplayer, WMP or TCPMP in DirectDraw mode.
I also have the issue with the Slingplayer Mobile on the Mogul. I don't have any video issues on any other streaming programs on the Mogul. Which is apparent that it isn't a Mogul problem as others are streaming full stream video flawlessly to the full screen.
I'll dig around a few more weeks but after that it's getting returned since this whole Slingbox thing is worthless if I can't watch it on my phone.
See if this configuration works better for anyone:
Buffer Setigns: Automatic
Optimization / Fast start: Enabled
Slingstream optimization Enabled: Medium Action
Video Res: 320x240
Audio: Mono High
Switch to landscape mode, and tap the bottom to make sure the contol bar is visible. With the control bar visible the video seems to be smoother.
I upgraded my 6700 to a Mogul Friday and I'm not sure what you guys are seeing.. I've never seen it on a 700wx but compared to my 6700 it's pretty good. I do see some picture stutter once in a while and some audio sync issues but it's by no means unwatchable..
Out of curiosity check your Device Information page and see if there are any differences.
ROM version 2.09.651.3
ROM date 6/14/07
Radio version 1.32.00
Protocol version ACAAAAM-4070
Hardware version 0003
PRL version 60610
PRI version 1.24_003
Most of that shouldn't make a difference but I'm curious about the HW version..
Slinging Tivo HD, Tivo S2, and OTA from a Pro HD, Tivo HD from a Pro, Tivo HD from a Solo, and Humax DRT800 from a Classic to iPhone, Dell Inspiron 1520 with Sprint EVDO, and a SlingCatcher over Mi-Connection cable with 2Mbps upload.
ROM version 2.08.651.4
ROM date 5/22/07
Radio version 1.32.00
Protocol version ACAAAAM-4070
Hardware version 0003
PRL version 60608
PRI version 1.24_003
I probably need to update my ROM, but I doubt that would fix anything?
Tough to say but if you're having problems it's worth a try. Remember that it wipes everything off the phone but if you use activesync you should be able to reload everything easily..

For what it's worth, updating the Mogul's ROM doesn't seem to affect SlingPlayer performance. I still have the original ROM (I haven't had the time to update) but from what I've read on Windows Mobile and Sprint forums, people with the playback issues who have done the update haven't seen any improvement.
I really don't know what the deal is. My first assumption was that it's an issue with the Mogul's DirectDraw driver since video performance with other media players suffers as well. However it's not affecting everyone, so perhaps it's something else or there are different sets of drivers out there. What would be great is if we could select the drivers to use and switch to Raw FrameBuffer or GDI, and offset the AV timing. This is how I get good playback on TCPMP.
Is there any update to this problem, or is everyone seem to be waiting for a Rom update?
i don't really understand why sling doesn't fix the problem like they can on their end. just give us more video option settings and we don't need a rom update. there are definitely problems in the playback on the mogul, no doubt about it. compare it to the 6700 and its obvious. why not just us more options in the playback settings and problem solved we don't to wait any longer for a rom update? just give us more options like tcpmp and the video playback on sling would be perfect as well. it can't be hard to add those additional playback options.
I'd be interested to hear if the 6800 from Verizon has the same problems. Then we will know if it is a Sprint Rom problem or a Sling problem.

I agree it's a Mogul problem and not a SlingPlayer problem, but if we could change the video driver and AV offset like we can in TCPMP, it would take care of the problem.
Is it agreed that not everyone has the problem?
Has anyone else checked their HW version, etc? Has anyone had one that had problems and exchanged it recently? Still have a problem?

Man, I had pretty much forgotten about this thread, Until I decided to move to a mogul (free from sprint) this week. I haven't put the SPM on it yet, but heck, if it doesn't look or run well, that would be more suckage than the problems I was having with the 700wx. I guess I will hold on to whichever one works, and send back the one that doesn't.
