 Hello,

My 1st post here. I own 2 slingbox tuners. Wonderful devices. I have  been successfully getting well over 3000kbs reliable LAN wireless connection from my house to my office.for hours and hours at a time without dropouts.I also was getting reliable 256kbs over the internet when I travelled.

Then I intalled the new firmware. It really bogged things down pretty bad over my LAN connection, but the internet connection remained ok.

After much problems  trying to downgrade the firmware back to v1_0_8,  I finally was back where I was before the new update....and guess what....It works  like it should again.

By the way....I think you should make it easier to revert back to earlier firmware. I shouldnt have to uninstall sling 1.4 then spend a lot of time to find a copy of 1.2  just to downgrade the firmware.

Also I found that once the new firmware was installed it would not be reverted backwards during a hard reset....and I tried this many times.

I love this box and hope you keep hard at it on your developments. I just thought you wanted to know my experiences.

Warmest Regards,

Mike

Would it be possible to detail the steps you took to do this.  It may help others in the same situation in the future.

 Thanks

As a sideline, I have noticed no problem with the new firmware.

But regarding your question. In almost any case whenver I install new software I save my old stuff, just in case something like this happens. Not just SlingPlayer but everything I upgrade. You just never know.

Far a a quick step-by-step, I can't really help unless you feel comfortable using a hex editor.

In the past if, I have had to revert back to older firmware, I simply took the older firmware, hex edit it to make the player think it's newer and then install. Most folks are not comfortable with that. Smile

But it would be nice if Sling Media offered something that would revert easily.

Do you have a Tuner Brandon?

Have any of you guys called or emailed Sling on this?

I haven't done it but if you uninstall the player and reinstall on older player can't you load the older firmware from that player?  Should be pretty easy.

Slinging Tivo HD from a Pro HD, Tivo Series 2 with cable and DirecTV from a Pro, Tivo HD from a Solo, Humax DRT800 from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO, and a SlingCatcher over Windstream DSL.

Ya, ummm, why?

From what I understand the new firmware, only fixes the lost IP address problem, it is not supposed to have changed something that caused a rate change.

The firmware is uploaded to the Slingbox, so if you are running older Slingplayer software you will still be running the new firmware. If you try to install the older firmware the slingbox knows it's older and won't let you.

What some folks have found is that Sling Media used unconventional naming of their player software and firmware, so if you search around you will find older player software with older firmware, but the way they named it, the slingbox thinks it's newer firmware.

In the past, I personally never bothered to do that as I can can change the info in the file, using a hex editor, to fake out the box.

Clear as mud huh?

Mud was never any clearer! I had a copy of the old firmware and using your suggestion of making a change with a hex editor did the trick! Now I just need to remember that a few of my Slings will be lying to me when I check the version numbers.

Disclaimer for anyone wanting to try this: If you don't know what you are doing with a hex editor do not attempt this. You can turn your Slingbox into a true brick.

 Again, thanks for the suggestion.

You could be a guinea pig and try upgrading again to see if it's a consistent problem or just happened that one time..

Buss,

I didn't think anyone would try it. Glad it worked for you.

Did it actually make a difference and solve your problem?

Yes it did, but I do not like the idea of having the firmware "lie" to me on the version. I spoke with Sling's tech support today to try and resolve the issue. It took over 1/2 hour before they would accept the fact that I have a problem. I was told that someone from Sling will contact me via email to arrange for Sling to perform a downgrade on the firmware remotely, this way the firmware will reflect the true version number. After the poor experience over the telephone, I will be surprised if anyone follows thru.

What I thought was interesting was the fact that they did not want to acknowledge that I had a problem. Video rate before upgrade was over 1400kbps, after the "upgrade" less that 200kbps. Now that I have the ability to load both verisions of the firmware this problem was easy to confirm.

By the looks of this thread I am not the only one with the problem. Of course the firmware upgrade is a seperate download. The current version of the Player on the website for download still carries the old firmware. This might be the reason why it has not been an issue for that many people. My units are the old Sling Classics, I wonder if this is affecting any other box?

Aleast with your assistance I have a good temporary solution.

Again thanks!

Out of curiosity, did you ever get contacted?

Yes, yesterdat I was contacted via email by a Sling engineer who gave me the impression that they were taking this problem seriously. They have been given temporary access to one of my Slingboxes, if they alternate between the two firmware verisions they will be able to see the problem for themselves. If/when anything comes from this, I will post more.

I updated my firmware and the video quality is much better than it was before the update.  However, I have lost the audio feed.  Double-checked my connections.  Too much of a coincidence to lose audio during a firmware update and blame it on cables.  Tech support doesn't want to acknowledge that there may be a problem with the firmware update.

Help!!Yell

Thanks,

Izzy

Sling has a new policy: They don't want you to watch TV using the Slingbox, so they are distributing software to cause your watching experience to leave you with a bad taste.

Come on now! The SlingBox is a great product that provides a service for a great number of consumers. But the fact is that there are clear cases where this firmware has caused problems. I have over 10 SlingBoxes deployed to support my operations, and when the upgrade was performed the exact same problem occured at all of them. I would not call this a chance occurance and the only thing common was the fact that they all peformed well before the "upgrade", horrible after the "upgrade", and well again after reverting back to the previous firmware using the method given by Brandon above.

My objective was to get the information to Sling so that they could work a solution. But in order to work a solutio they must first acknowledge the problem. Tech support was of no use to me, but one must consider thier purpose and limited scope of knowledge. I have a tech support staff in my operations and know that they will work out of a "playbook" to assist customers. What is needed by the tech support staff is to acknowledge that the customer hs a problem and that the problem needs to be elevated for resolution.
