I have always used my slingbox over my lan from my bedroom. I am going to visit my parents and will be using it over the internet for the first time.

My question is there anything I need to do  to prepare, or will the software somehow automatically find my slingbox?

thanks,

ej

Probably you will not need to do anything -

But I would also suggest finding a local hotspot to test your configuration.  It is possible that your router will need some tweaking in order for it to pass an external request to port 5001 (or whatever port you chose).

Make sure your router at the Slingbox location has the port open for whatever port you have used (5001, 443...etc..)  As Floyed says it's best to use a friends or hotspot location to verify you are connected.  If the laptop is what you used to setup the slingbox in the first place then it will know the Finder ID.  But to make sure go into the slingplayer at home and click on Slingbox in the menu at the top and edit the slingbox directory.  You will see the finder ID.  Copy it down for later use if needed.
