Hi all:

Noob here with a question: I was thinking of purchasing a Slingbox Pro box so I could watch football at work on Saturdays using my DirecTV HR-20 DVR.

However I tested the download speed on our cable modem connection at work at it tested out at a measly 230 kbps...is that a sufficient download speed to support a watchable picture or am I screwed? Is there a minimum download speed that yields acceptable frame rates on a remote PC?

This is approaching the minimal acceptable speed.  On a erratic connection, I have seen my speed drop to 90 kbps for a brief time - the buffer was able to keep up as long as the signal optimized to a higher speed relatively quickly.

If you have a friend with a SlingBox, you could ask him to manually reduce the download speed to 230 kbps within the SlingPlayer software.  It would allow you to see what the results might look at.

Another issue that you might face is that whether the 230 kbps is the speed from the Internet to the corporate network, or whether the speed is throttled per internal machine.  If it is per machine, you might be okay.  If it is a limit placed on all communications with the outside world, then you might find that once you start processing the SlingBox stream, you will see reduced speeds as you share the connection with others.

Finally, be aware that there have reports of individuals nearly losing (or losing) their jobs when they started receiving the SlingBox stream.  Unless your corporate IT supplies a large pipe to the Internet, the SlingBox/SlingPlayer can consume a great deal of network resources.

Usually, the important # is your upload speed at home.  230 is incredibly slow for a cable connection.  Definitely needs some looking into.

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

My workplace is a lab (a singlewide trailer actually if you can believe it) and I think what might be diluting the speed is our rather complicated router system that distributes Internet connectivity to roughly 6 PC workstations throughout the lab. However if you think 230 kbps is sufficient I think I will go ahead and give it a try.

Thanks Floyd for the headsup regarding possibly getting in trouble while receiving the SlingBox stream...like I mentioned our lab is in a trailer located in a remote area quite distant from our company headquarters so I don't think it will be an issue (and in case it is an issue I would like to think they would reprimand me rather than fire me!!!) :)
