Hi,
Im am moving to Australia soon and want to watch Sky TV channels from the UK on my PC in Australia using the Slingbox. I have some questions which I would really appreciate being answered:-
1/ The slingbox will be based at my mother in law's house in the UK so once set up will we BOTH be able to watch different channels at the same time (she would watch Sky as normal and Id use my slingbox based at her place)? From reading other posts I understand I can, but Im a bit confused as to how this is done!
2/ What Slingbox would you recommend I buy. I will get the PAL version but what one?
Thanks in advance - Slingbox sounds great!
Cheers
eurodono & brazytee:
Sorry you did not get an earlier response to your question.
1. If you want your m-in-law to watch different channels from yourself, you'll need two Sky digiboxes. I recommend a Sky+ DVR digibox for your viewing in view of the time change between UK & Oz.
2. S/B classic PAL is a good choice, esp. as it's discounted so heavily.
I have been slinging from UK to Cal for over a year without problems. Sometimes (every month or so) you may need to power cycle your Sky box, or your router in the UK, or your S/B if things get hung up.
You'll need an upload and download speed of at least 800kbps to get a tolerable picture.
Thanks for posting a response on this question cymro. Much appreciated.
The Solo and Pro have just been released in the UK - do you know if there is any advantage in getting these?
Also the router at my mother in laws house is in a different room so should I buy slinglink turbo or is a Homeplug the same product?
Thanks
Hiya - the solo and pro definitely have advantages for LAN streaming by way of better picture quality but over remote links I'm not sure it would make that much difference to be honest. The discounted SB Classic might be a better bet.
As cymro says a PVR would be a good idea. With the SB Classic it has a built-in TV tuner that would allow you to watch something via it whilst your mother-in-law watched a different channel on Sky, but you couldn't watch a different Sky channel each. However with the time difference and a PVR it probably wouldn't really be an issue.
Homeplug would do the job fine - I'm using the 200AV Solwise ones and they work brilliantly (although the 85Mbps models would be fine too).
The main limiting factor you'll have is the upload speed at your mother-in-laws. I've just gone from 230-odd kbps upload to 340-odd kbps and noticed a definite improvement. If you can get above 500kbps then you'd get a pretty reasonable picture full screen. Unfortunately it'll just depend on what ISP options are available at your mother-in-laws.
Let us know how you get on!
Cheers
Alan
Thanks for your suggestions Alan. Look forward to giving it all a go in late December.
