I have a Slingbox Pro with an SA 8300HD/DVR.  The HDMI is going straight to the TV and I am trying to use the HD connector with the component outputs from the cable box.

If the TV is off, all is well, but when the TV is turned on, the slingplayer gets a "no video signal" error.  Using the passthrough to connect component cables to the TV isn't a viable option.

Am I stuck using S-video if the TV is in use, or is there a way to override the cable box's desire to limit outputs?

That's a new twist on it but do a search here for HDCP..

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

So basically, unless I can get my cable company to do something, the answer is to use s-video.

IIRC, the SA8300 will not output to both Component and HDMI at the same time (and there is no user control over this), so you would either need to use passthrough or S-video.
