Sounds cool... but how will it be able to pull information from the VBI when the video source is a PVR? I doubt all PVRs record (and playback) the VBI info faithfully...

Slingbox Clip+Sling Details Uncovered!
We've been hearing about the upcoming "Clip+Sling" feature for quite some time now, though relatively few additional details have been released since the CES show in January. Today some of those "finer" details about Clip+Sling are starting to come to light thanks to a bit of one-on-one time with the patent application information on the program. Tons of never before seen details inside!

They are supposed to anyway. In fact if they did not do it correctly then you could lose the CC.
"Conventional broadcast television signals are transmitted in a data format that is used to construct individual television frames. Each frame contains video image data (i.e., pixel data) used to create images on the television screen and control information used to control the presentation of the image, such as synchronization and timing information. The Video Blanking Interval (VBI) is the upper 21 lines of a typical television frame. These VBI lines are not displayed on the television, but are instead used to carry the television control information. Up to ten VBI lines can be used for transmission of data separate from and in addition to the television image control information. Additionally, line 21 of the VBI is used for transmission of closed captioning information."
But, there can be several holes in the system. Say you video tape the girlfriend doing, well let's say adult things, there will be nothing they can check in the stream that says it's an adult rated video.
SM, IMHO, will have to have someone watching the upload site at all times.

Anyone else underwhelmed by this clip+sling feature? Or is it just me?
I DON'T want to be able to clip 2 minutes of a stream and share it with others.
I want to be able to record an hour long program and use it for my own personal use to watch it later. In other words, to be able to use the Sling like a PVR on my PC.

Now that a few more details have been posted, is there a Beta group available for early testing? I'd enjoy seeing how it compares to capturing the video from current feeds with programs like Camtasia Studio and uploading to current video sharing sites or just uploading the encoded clip. Here's one using my cellphone's EVDO connection and Quicktime encode in 2006 -- link.

I agree with you...this is a lot of effort apparently on Sling Media's part for what is nearly useless functionality to my thinking. Add to this the following:
- The content creators, like Sony Television, HBO, NHL, etc, can and probably will restrict the sharing of the videos based on the rules that they come up with. Not what Sling Media says or any other third party.
For example they can tell Sling Media what can be shared, including the duration, the quality (e.g., resolution, frame rate of a video content, bit rate of an audio content), and the number of people allowed to access the content.
- Sling Media can and probably will put advertisements on the shared video, at the beginning, pertaining to the subject of the video.
And apparently it will be forced upon us when we upgrade the player. Why should I want this extra stuff on my system, if I will not use it?
No thank you.

This is quite the worthless feature. I wish they would use this as a PVR for myself rather than a 2 min clip thing.

From what I can tell there really won't be much more added to the program to bog anything down.
If it's simply an added button to the normal player and maybe a slightly larger skin file it shouldn't be too much.
Might even have a way to turn it off and on. I
In fact I would like that feature so, for instance, if I don't want the kids clipping something there is an admin function to turn it off.

See photo in article. They looked fine.
But, I have been using Camtasia for some time and love it!

We don't know what the actual video cache size is going to be, if it will be something the user can set or coded into the player.
Don't get me wrong, I would like the ability to record what I want, for how long and share with whoever I would like.
Sounds like SM is trying to make sure everything is going to be legal. Maybe they are worrird too much, I dunno.

If this turns Slingbox into a tivo, Slingbox will be the greatest device ever. But if the only thing you can do is put it online, it's such a horrible idea because they obviously have the power to turn it into a tivo and don't want to allow it which is too bad.
Even if not a PVR, pause and rewind would be more useful than this. Without the requirement of a video capture card, the PVR would be very powerful. It would essentially be a ReplayTV/Tivo/BeyondTV killer!
From what I've read, the video stream was encoded specifically to prevent direct recording, probably to avoid flak from media companies over Digital Rights Management. Replay actually designed "Slingcorder" to do exactly what Frank is talking about, but the encoding killed that app.
Clip+Sling seems like Sling Media throwing an extremely DRM-correct bone to its customers and touting it as some kind of added feature, when all it does it give back a tiny bit of what was taken away when they encoded it.
The over-reaching of the media companies to protect and even enhance its revenue streams by hanging all kinds DRM restrictions and gimmicks on products, and trying to force them on even hardware providers, has resulted in nothing but headaches for consumers, such as people who legally buy tunes for their iPods having more trouble using them than people who pirate the tunes.
I look forward to a consumer revolt when people have had enough of this bunk that DRM gets thrown into the garbage bin where it belongs, and all use is fair use except resale of copies for profit.
Wow! A Slingbashing thread! We haven't had one of those for a while.
I'm not ready to jump on board yet, though. Remember, this is just 1/3 of the picture. It seems to me that Clip+Sling is a YouTube competitor, pure and simple. The SlingCatcher hardware and the SlingProjector software will complete the other 2/3 of the picture.
The older I get, the better I was.

Now works with ALL Slingboxes, player software & firmware.
Might be more useful than Clip+Sling if it works......
