Well after many hours of experimentation I have confirmed that my Slingbox Pro is properly set up for remote viewing as I was able to connect via Slingfinder at my work location...that's the good news. The bad news is that it only worked when my laptop was connected directly to our workplace cable modem (did not work when I tried it behind our company's Dell firewall device).

So now it looks like I have to consider either a smartphone like the Treo 700 or possibly a broadband PC card for my laptop such as the Verizon PC5750.

Is there a consensus on which of the above options gives the best video performance?

There are two things to consider:

1. The enhanced mobility of having a PocketPC phone.

2. The flexibility of having a phone card. Because you'll be able to use your laptop completely.

Either way, make sure the service is 3G and that you have an unlimited use plan.

I recently picked up a new ATT 8525 with 3G service and the tethering option. Works beautifully here in my area, and Slinging works like a charm when tethered. Plus, you save a few bucks if you roll both services into the same device rather than get the phone and a seperate card.

I wrote a little about my phone here in my TechLore blog, but maybe I should do something here at SlingCommunity that focuses on Slinging with an 8525.

I would love to see some examples of your slinging on the 8525. I am looking at a new phone for the wife.  Let's see it, maybe I will get her one.

Get the PDA phone. With a program called PDANet ( www.junefabrics.com ), my phone gets transfer speeds of 2.2 Mbps as a modem to my laptop (via USB) and 756 Kbps when used alone. If you get the PC card, then obviously you won't have the convenience of also being able to sling on your phone.

hjackson:

Does that 2.2 mbps transfer speed require that your phone service provider offers 3G connections? I guess I am not understanding how PDANet works...I live in Podunk southeastern North Carolina where there is no 3G coverage available....
