For Steve H: Many thanks for all your postings. It is so good to have a member of the Sling Mac Dev Team involved so directly. I live in both California and London. I use a Slingbox Pro in the US connected to both my cable and satellite DVR boxes, and in the UK two Slingbox Classics hooked up to two Sky cable boxes. Having two different versions of SlingPlayer is very confusing. Am I correct in believing that the two versions exist so that the firmware update built in to the 1.0.4 version upgrades the appropriate Slingbox, whereas the software side of 1.0.4 is the same for both the US and UK? If so, it presumably doesn't matter which version of 1.0.4 I use subsequent to having upgraded the firmware in each of the boxes. Is this correct, please, or do I need to use a different version of SlingPlayer in each country even after I've upgraded the firmware? Wouldn't it be simpler, cleaner and more intuitive to have separate firmware updates for the hardware and keep the 1.0.4 SlingPlayer as the same app which can be used on all versions of Slingbox?

The Mac SlingPlayer applications found on the US and UK disk images are identical, including the firmware included in the application.   With the SlingPlayer application from either disk image you can watch any Slingbox, and upgrade the firmware to any Slingbox, regardless of the which model (e.g. US or UK) you're connecting to.

The difference between the two disk images is the Software License Agreement that is presented when the disk image is mounted.  The SLA that is presented on the UK disk image specifically addresses conventions and requirements in the EU/Common Market.

Since you're residing in both places, either disk image is suitable.  For customers permanently residing in the UK, we recommend always downloading the UK disk image; in future, that disk image may have more UK-specific content (links to release notes, extras, etc).

Thanks for raising the issue; I hope this helps.

Best regards,

St3ve H

Thank you, Steve, for your quick response. From your explanation it does appear that SlingMedia have made the installation appear more complicated than it really should be. Why on earth don't you have just one app which includes BOTH License Agreements? Then there would be absolutely no ambiguity. If, at some later date, you add content specific to the US or UK, then at that point start using two different apps. I wrote to you as I was not completely convinced by the explanation given by US Sling Customer Service (located in Costa Rica!). They had previously told me that the firmware side of the SlingPlayer app is different in the US and UK versions. I'm glad you have clarified the position. Thanks.

Well, to be clear, the decision to make separate disk images was mine, then forwarded to our Agency of Vogon Product Manglement where it was signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat and recycled as firelighters.Smile

The reason for this--not to quibble, mind you--was that having both agreements on a single disk image wouldn't have suited the purpose, since the Apple disk image format only allows different languages (English, French, etc) representing the same license agreement, not different license versions based on economic/political regions.

So as you can see, the confusion really couldn't have been avoided, though it's perfectly understandable.  I'm all in favo(u)r of keeping installation as simple as possible, and appreciate your feedback and remain open to advice to make it more so.

Maybe it would be too simplistic for lawyers, but couldn't the two license agreements be combined into one with clear language pertaining to each region?
