Interesting that it doesn't have built in wireless.  Personally, I think built in is a bad idea, (extra cost, standards change, etc), but I hope it will work with other USB wireless adapters besides the Sling one..

I agree. One of the major selling points is to take it with you to a hotel. Every hotel I have ever stayed at has wireless internet.

However, the upside is that as wireless technology changes, the slingcatcher does not become obsolete.  You just need to buy a different USB adapter.

I was glad to see that wireless will require a USB adapter. One size fits all solutions such as integrated WiFi would limit flexibility in the types of deployments one could attempt.  As mentioned in my comment on the blog's page, I'm hoping the adapter allows the attachment of an external antenna source, thereby eliminating the need for an Ethernet bridge  / game adapter in settings for example such as RV Parks with WiFi.

I have a slingox downstairs that I access from my computer.  Upstairs, I have a TV in the guest room with the only connection being to a spare DVD player.  Would I be able to watch streaming content from my slingbox on my TV in the guest room using the slingcatcher?  If so, what would be the setup?

Thanks!

Yes! Slinging to a TV Set is its primary design function. You will also be able to send content from your PC to the SlingCatcher / TV as well using its built-in SlingProjecter function.  Simply connect the SlingCatcher to your home network either through Ethernet or its optional USB wireless adapter and connect its output to the TV. Another way to look at it is that it's a hardware version of SlingPlayer only NO PC required!

The wireless will be nice, USB or otherwise. I am looking forward to using it in hotel rooms and these days they are moving to wireless only.

that "1st half of 2007" thing at CES last year is killing me...

October 22, 2007 10:51 PM

It was CES this year! :)

Yeah, it's driving all of us batty! :) Such is life. SlingMedia's been doing a lot and I am sure this thing will be a stellar product when it's released...

According to this report, the .VOB format supported by SlingCatcher will allow you to stream DVD's that have been ripped onto your network connected PC. I've never heard of this before but if that's true.. I'll be waiting outside in the cold for this bad boy to go on sale. Can anyone here elaborate on this capability?

Well, it's not a difficult thing to do. I have almost my entire DVD library ripped and stored on my computer. I access the files using MPlay on my Roku HD-1000 Photobridge. It's an awesome way to go. Now, if SlingCatcher will be able to do this - THAT WILL ROCK! It's looking like this bad boy is going to be my dream piece of equipment. WOW. Add that to my HD-1000, my AppleTV and my Vudu and now I am cookin' with gas! :D

Can you give us any quick info on ripping to VOB?  I rip most of mine to ISO and run on an emulated drive..

I'm wondering how it will get around the stumbling block at those hotels where the access point requires a room number to be entered before you can access the net.  I've been places where Outlook and SlingPlayer would not work until you had launched a browser and accepted the terms.  I guess I'll have to buy one to find out.

Now let's be honest about built-in wireless, guys.  If there were built-in wireless, the cost would be $100 higher.  If the cost were $100 higher, it would take 6 months longer to convince the wife that you need one.  With the lower cost, one can always sneak a USB to wireless adapter through the family checking account and chalk it up to installation expense if questions arise.  :)

The older I get, the better I was.

A couple coments:

Ryandh - I use a program on the Mac called MacTheRipper. It rips the structure of the DVD to the hard drive - so all the folders and all are intact. My Photobridge will also play the ISOs but I find using the DVD VOB folder structure as easier. The ISO is just a disk image of the folder structure. I'm not sure what's available in the PC world to do the same. I would bet the Catcher could play the ISO files as well...

Bancado - Agreed. Also, think of this concept - You can get USB EVDO modems now. How about the idea of plugging your EVDO modem right into the Catcher and being able to use it via that connect and thereby bypassing the hotel WiFi.

Can anyone embellish on the remote control aspect?

Can I take my SKY remote control and aim it at the SlingCatcher and have it work or must I have the SlingCatcher remote "learn" the IR codes for 3rd party RC's?
