I bought the HD Connect without really researching it (stupid) just assuming it would allow for streaming of HD content. Now I find it down-converts 1080i to standard definition. I was able to have that quality over the coaxial output of the Slingbox Pro. So what exactly is the purpose of the HD Connect device? Is there any improvement over using the coaxial output? And how does it compare to composite and S-video? Any benchmarks available?

I got a HD Connect for Christmas (for myself) and connected it to my SB Pro. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed in the quality of the pic compared to what I had before. I sling my DirecTV HR20 to my Mac Book Pro without any issues, its just the picture quality seems to have degraded. I have checked my network is OK (100Mbps wired) and I have the latest firware. Maybe I just expected it to be sharper and with more colors, mine seems a little washed, even on a flat screen display. I also noted that the throughput seems to have dropped from what I remember. I seem to remember numbers around 4000-5000 kps before and now it's 1000kps max, typically 400-600.
I don't really see anything to tweak, I confirmed the settings in my preferences are set to auto configure the quality, other than that, it's pretty straightforward. Unless anyone can offer any suggestions on how to test or improve the picture quality, I'm left wondering if it was worth the 50 bucks.
Thanks
Harley
There are many, many, many threads arguing about the advantage of the HDConnect.. I think I get a little bit better quality than composite. Some people say they don't. It also adds a 4th input. The biggest purpose is probably for people that have boxes that don't output on SD outputs or don't output menus/guides on the SD outputs when HD is being used..
Harley_Dog's issues are definitely problems.

Thanks for the reply. I read a Gizmodo revew stating that the video on an internal network is significantly improved but there's no improvement over the internet. That's fine by me as I'm cuurently using it over my network. Unfortunately while I have noticed an improvement in video quality I'm now suffering from a huge audio lag. Any ideas?
Never mind, lag's gone. Must have been a temporary glitch (my connection is 10 mbs so couldn't be bandwidth problem).
