OK guys I'm a newbie, still playing with my new Slingbox AV. I have a question, are they planning on a version of Mobile that will work on my Blackberry? Is there a current version that will work on a blackberry?

 Thanks in advance!

Yes, they need to come out with a version for Blackberry. My vote is in.

At this point, the Blackberry OS is closed and proprietary. AFAIK, there is no SDK or ability to write a 3rd party program such as SlingPlayer for the Blackberry platform. I'm sure Sling would love to do it, but right now it's not possible.

BlackBerry has device application development tools publicly available on their web site (http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/), so I do not believe what you have said is correct.

I look forward to the Blackberry Version. It will be warmly received by many, as popular as the BB has become for not just business users but for the conventioal consumer.

I actually just posted a thread on this-- it's getting rediculous. My friend made me so jealous! The first day he set up his Slingbox he had it up and running on his Windows Mobile Phone. Not fair.

With the soon to be released 4.5 OS for BB, does anyone know of any updates on the info?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, there are other threads with active discussions on SPM for BlackBerry.

How did anyone at Sling Media think that a Symbian client was more important and wanted than a Blackberry client?

Blackberry's must out number Symbians 25 to 1 ???

1. Symbian has over 50% of the worldwide smartphone share, more than twice what RIM has with BlackBerry.  While Blackberry has been gaining marketshare, and Symbian has been losing it, Symbian is still in the lead - both in new sales and installed base.  BlackBerry is huge in the US but not as much in the rest of the world, Symbian dominates Europe and a lot of the rest of the world outside of the US.

2. Symbian (both S60 and UIQ) have been open plaforms that support media applications for a while, BlackBerry not so much.  It isn't until the new 4.5 software that the platform is really capable of hosting SlingPlayer Mobile.  Symbian was a viable platform for SPM before BlackBerry.

The real question is WHY is it taking so long to release the Blackberry version when you demo'ed it at CTIA so long ago?

What was demo'd was just a proof of concept.  Going from that to a supportable, reliable commerical client has been more work than anticipated.  We've been working directly with RIM as they work to update the OS to support media applications, such as SlingPlayer.

With the recent release of Blackberry JDE tools for developers & Sling being J2ME based, what does that do to expedite any beta?

October 14, 2008 2:31 PM

It has no impact, we close enough to beta that it makes no difference.

Now that comment makes my day. I would love to stay and chat but I need to get the Blackberries out and start charging. A man has to be ready for action at all times

(Yes, I know "close" does not a BETA make. But I can still start being excited! No support for BB has me leaving my BB 8330 Curve and 8100 Pearl at home and lugging a TREO 700wx. Now that IS truely a sacrifice for the cause!)

Member I love Slingplayer mobile on my Dell Axim X51v, but for that I need an access point. When I updated my phone with Verizon Wireless, I went with the Blackberry Pearl without even thinking about the slingplayer (shame on me). That was my mistake. I probably would have gone for a Treo if I was thinking sling as I have no allegiance to Blackberry - I just want a phone that functions to fulfill my wants and needs.
My issue with the release of a sling solution for the Blackberry is more media driven. Shame on whoever made an announcement back in January about a sling solution for the Blackberry, only to be sitting here 10 months later with nothing, not even a Beta. Very poor media relations, as teasing the general public is sad if delivery seemingly doesn't happen. At this point, no matter what anyone says, why should I believe we will have something rolled out when all I've seen is a "boy who cried wolf" scenerio. If I wasn't tied by contract to my Blackberry, it would be gone now for a Treo so I could sling while mobile on my phone. But instead, I sit here with only open promises and empty hope, and an X51v searching for wireless access.

Here's a prime example of the total PR failure of SlingMedia.... The post of "MegaZone" last month says "we close enough"... Another post in another thread from a week ago says they're close. A post from July 30th from the same guy says "they're close to a beta". BS from day one. Don't announce a product you don't intend on releasing this year. Don't tell us soon, when you know that 10 months is not soon. If you didn't anticipate how much work was involved, hire a new project manager. Just give a freakin answer to us loyal customers that are seriously considering jumping ship for a company that doesn't jerk around it's customers....

Where did I say back in June that it was close to a beta? If you mean this post you'll note I said no such thing at the time. More recently I have started to say we're close, because we are. And we're closer now than a month ago. I'm the Beta Program Manager for SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry, I should know.

We've provided all the information we can provide at this time. Sometimes development takes more time than expected, and sometimes it is not under your control. We're working with our partner, RIM, to bring SPM to their platform. What answer would you like? When will it ship? When it is done, that's the best answer today. We're not announcing any dates until we have confidence in meeting them. We've made the mistake in the past of announcing dates that proved untenable, and we're trying not to repeat that. To give any dates at this point in time would be misleading to the users.

Guess I lost my shot at the beta... Just expressing one customer's view. I can see your point. I'll take my chances and hopefully still have my BB when this comes out.
