Well... let's see if is true.

I talked to a representative today here at CES regarding their "recording" feature in the upcoming SlingPlayer 2.0 called Clip & Sling. Turns out Sling has had to reach content redistribution deals with EVERY TV content owner on the planet for this feature. Each content owner must explicitly give Sling permission to record, and then sets the time limit - some may allow 15 seconds, some four minutes, etc. No agreement: no recording.
This is an INSANE amount of work for a feature with dubious value to customers. From our perspective as the publishers of At-Large Recorder, it's great news, as SlingPlayer 2.0 will NOT have any significant recording options.

When has Sling said anything different? I doubt I'll use it much but it's kinda cool, like a youtube poster built into the player, and you don't have to have a capture card or other method of capturing the video..
BTW, How are your support forums at Applian.com coming??
Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.
I guess sling media will have to disable recording all together for those providers with which they could not reach an agreement? Too bad, as full length recording would have been a nice feature.
I guess i knew this would not happen thus i picked up an elgato hybrid just to see what it could do
and i must say it has filled my computer based recording needs quite well, at least for now so...
i won't be all that disappointed if sling+clip is limited to only short clips and after using the elgato,
i find more difficult to watch the slingstream anyway though Sling HD should be a big improvement.
(if only it were cheaper)
We're going off topic again but oh well..
It's back to what the SlingBox was designed for, watching your live or recorded programming from home, not recording or receiving live TV itself.
If you're going to be at the computer when the show is on, get a tuner and watch it live. If I'm in a hotel, I'll watch it on the hotel TV..

A quick correction on my previous post regarding Clip & Sling. I went back to the main Sling booth again and learned the following:
1. You can record up to 2 minutes from any source without a content redistribution contract. However, your clips are only accessible to you.
2. All recorded clips are automatically uploaded to the Sling server. There is no local file storage for your own clips.

Aside: the reason I posted this in the first place is that there was some confuision and uncertainty about what sort of recording features were going to be in the next version of SlingPlayer. Many people were waiting to see exactly WHAT Sling was going to provide before even bothering to look at At-Large Recorder. Hopefully people who are interested in recording for their own use will not waste any more time waiting for a feature Sling is never going to provide.

I believe this headache and nightmare about the content providers. I'm involved in some other work that involves movie and TV content providers and trust me - it's a nightmare. The business model is designed to protect their current and longstanding business model and it is NOT structured at all towards innovation. The current paradigm is content protection rather than content distribution. And it hurts the content providers every time.
Do you know how many people started watching a particular show because they saw a clip of it on YouTube? I would imagine tons! I know of people who like shows like Colbert and The Office. They first started watching clips of those shows on YouTube. So extra distribution channels help but the content providers are too stupid to see it.
As I learned from one of the Blake Kerkorian interviews I saw: We were ONE Supreme Court vote away from having VCRs made illegal...
WOW!
This is the mindset SlingMedia deals with every freaking day.
By the way, Bill, At Large 2.0 rocks. I love it. Just wish ya had a Mac client as well! :)

That's so worthless then. Great post, Bill. I love how Sling isn't being honest with their users. Why don't they just outline all the restrictions on sling.com?
Probably because it's fairly well known. And also because the service has not launched yet and is possibly subject to change.
