I wanted to pick up the tuner version of the Slingbox for a couple reasons: It's a great price and secondly having only one Digital Cable HD PVR terminal in the house I didn't want to have it tied up if I'm slinging on the go and my wife is home and wanting to watch the TV. The tuner allows me to watch TV "in the background" so to speak. My question is though, is the tuner becoming obsolete. How much longer will analog cable signals be available? I'm sure it'll be a while but as long as I can get the main ones, TSN(ESPN), NBC, ABC, CBS, Disc, etc.  over  analog I'm happy. I'm in Canada by the way...not that it'll make much difference...for the most part it'll be a North American shift when this stuff changes. I'm just wondering if I'll get at least 3-4 years of service similar to what I'm getting now. Any info is appreciated!!

If you are a cable subscriber, then it will still work... mostly.  The changeover affects over-the-air broadcasts.  With my digital cable service, the cable company still also sends the first 80 or so channels in analog and they work with a standard TV and no cable box.  So the Slingbox tuner also works in this scenario.  As a test, connect your cable directly to your TV without your cable box or PVR.  The channels your TV picks up is also the channels a Slingbox Tuner will pick up.

Yeah, I'm still getting 70+ channels, and truthfully I only watch about 10 of the major ones (any sports, NBC, ABC, CBS, etc.) Do you think this availability will be the case for at least another 3-4 years? I occasionally use this remotely or while sitting out on the deck, but mostly I want it for when the Blackberry client is available publicly.

In 2009 when the government changes the over the air channels, basically with the good ole fashioned rabbit ears, you will need a digital tuner on your tv to get your rabbit ears to work.

However, the cable companies are required to contiune to carry an analog signal for their cable customers until 2012.  So here is what you will need in 2012 if you have a Slingbox Tuner, in order to use it the same way they as you  would now.

Cable from the wall, into a digital down-converter box, into the Slingbox Tuner.  Since the Slingbox Tuner has an NTSC (analog) tuner and not an ATSC (digital) you will need to down convert.

Right now the government is allowing everyone apply for Digital Converter box coupons.  They are providing people with $40 coupons (limit 2 per address) in order to purchase the new boxes, which come out next month (Feb 18 to be exact).  The boxes will run about $60

I'm in Canada so I'm sure it'll be slightly different but probably about the same timeline. But thanks, that does give me some more insight. Chances are I'll upgrade to whatever Sling has available in a couple years time but for now the Tuner will serve exactly what I'm looking for. The extra features would be nice from the Pro, but not needed and it's an extra $100. The Tuner was a gift so I think I'll hang on to it especially if I know I can get the same service I'm getting now for at least another 2-3 years. Thanks!!

Cable companies are only required to carry local broadcast stations in analog until 2012.  Some cable companies (like ones in New York) have already moved almost all channels to digital and removed the analog versions of those channels.  So the closer you get to 2012, the less analog channels you are going to receive.

I think you'll see more and more cable companies ding what Comcast did.  Give customer "free" basic digital boxes to start converting them over.  Then move channels off of the lower teir of cable to digital channels.  This will force people to start the transition to digital tuners but will also free up a lot of space on their networks to add new channels.

Slingbox Pro Slinging Comcast Analog and HD via Comcast Internet using AirLink Powerline adapters; Slingbox Classic Slinging Sunddenlink Analog Cable and DirecTV HR21 via Sunddenlink Internet, using netgear powerline adapters.

Getting into the fine print, are cable companies required to keep locals analog until 2012 or are they required to move them by 2012.

Will  the proactive ones have everything but their locals converted to digital ahead of time so all that will be available on analog will be the locals?

Or can they move everything and have nothing on analog soon?

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.
