I've been working on a new application for recording my Slingbox output to the PC hard drive and also for improving viewing with features like commercial skip and pausing the live stream while continuing to record to disk. There is also a nice resume feature for half viewed videos which takes you back to where you left off easily.

The main purpose is to transfer from my PVR to my computer for offline viewing, but there are other uses as well, such as viewing one slingbox in multiple locations.

If you feel like testing this application, you can download SLR, the recorder, and VSLR, the viewer, from http://www.benlo.com/slingbox. It now has an installation program, so it installs like any other software. It requires the latest VLC be installed for the viewer to operate.

At this point, setup requres the IP address and Port along with your admin password. I have only tested it with the Classic, so beyond that, I await feedback and suggestions for improvements. It's early beta testing, so expect bugs. You find'em, I'll try to squash em.

I look forward to hearing what people think. The underlying code is based on the work done by checksumcoder that has been posted here before. Many thanks to him for sharing his source code.

Thanks. There must be a dll missing in the zip that is on my computer. I will try to figure it out.

It works for me on 2 computers, XP and W2K.

Just an fyi, I tried it on Windows Media center and XP Pro and and I get an error message that the application failed to initialize properly (0x0150002) on both PC's.

Version 054 is now at www.benlo.com/slingbox and that seems to be have resolved the initialize problem, I hope, please let me know...

Thanks,

Peter

Version 054 is not at www.benlo.com/slingbox ?????

Anyways's this one works. Not sure if this is something I would use though.

I see that the files are not deleted when exiting, even if I just wanted to watch something and not record it.

Will play with it some more tho, might be usefull for someone that does not have a PVR. Will let you know how it works for me after some testing.

Have a Sansa device or MP3 player, then check out The latest!

I have been playing with this new tool as well.  Its operation is straight forward and clean - nice.

Given that I use a SlingBox Classic connected to my standard cable, to be useful it will need to able to set the recording channel and to schedule a recording.  Neither of the features are yet implemented, but GeoNomad has indicated that they are planned additions.

I told GeoNomad in a PM that I like what I see so far and will continue follow the development of this product.   It is the best of the no-cost products that I have seen so far.

I agree with Floyd, this can become something very nice if some additional features are implemented. Good job !

I just noticed that a new version has been posted - SLR055.  It is very similar to SLR054, except that it includes an installer - thus it works right out of the box.  Thanks for the continued development.

Very nice implementation, Peter.  I had been playing around with ChecksumCoder's recorder.exe and his vlc plug-in with limited success, then spotted this thread.  Your adaptation installed easily and worked on the first try.  Thank You!

Well done indeed!

Any chance of a mac port of this lil' gem?

I apologize ahead of time if this is a stupid question. Maybe you can help me, I keep receiving this error message when I try to connect to my Slingbox. It says: "C\Users\myname\Documents\My Videos\2008-01-22-1305.asf not found." I realize that this has to do with the stream file, but I can't figure out why I am getting this message. Thanks very much. Hope someone can help out. Thanks. Later

SLR is trying to save the stream to C\Users\myname\Documents\My Videos\2008-01-22-1305.asf

Use File - Save As before pressing Start to specify where you would like the file saved.

The default is in a folder called My Videos in your My Documents folder, but for some reason your system has My Documents configured oddly so Windows is confusing the program. Best to override the default with c:\videos or anyplace you like that is not read only.

Argh! For some reason I can't seem to get this thing going. Well your info above did help out cuz I was able to find where the .asf files were going. They were going here: C:\Users\My Name\Videos. Now when I click on start I get two error messages, one saying "C:\Users\My Name\Videos\2008-01-22-2157.asf is empty. And the other basically says that it can't find the .asf file. Obviously when I go to the file the .asf files have nothing in them. I just can't seem to get the video to come up. Sorry if this is ridiculous, but I've been at this for a while now. Thanks. Later

I have actually had good luck with this software and provided GeoNomad some good feedback via PM.  I would however like to see the ability to record at a higher resolution.  maybe 640 x 480 or 1024 x 768.

GeoNomad is on the right track and i think that with our feedback he can have one hell of an application here.

I'd like to see the ability to automatically record (or at least export) to native ipod/iphone format (.mp4).

Slinger saves the file in asf format which can be converted easily to ipod format with VLC or many other converters.

http://wiki.videolan.org/IPod shows how to do it with VLC.

I could add a command to automatically convert files if that were desired by a few people.  It would be added to VSLR as file - export - choose format...

I'm relocating to New Zealand this summer and I'm looking at ways I can watch American Football in NZ. I know I could go the typical slingbox route and just stream the video...but I want to host football parties so I'd like to get the video in the highest quality possible w/o the possibility of skipping. I know I wouldn't be able to watch it live, but I'm willing to live with that.

I want to setup a Directv HD-DVR with slingbox and a PC here in the United States at a friend's house. Could I then save the file to this PC (in the U.S.), using your software. Then transferring the file to NZ using a FTP server?

Does your software save the file in HD? surround sound?

I installed it and tried it. Looks neat and seems to work. The only problem I have is that every few second, the recorded material freezes and then resumes. I performed a few tests and all resulted in the same problem.

When watching LIVE via the regular Slingbox app, it works properly.

I could discuss this off-line and send an example of the asf file for troubleshooting.
