Wow...I came on here to discuss the exact same problem.
Slingbox PRO.
ADSL
Airport Extreme Router
Mac & PC.
PC laptop works fine. I can log into my slinbox and it works well. When I log in using my MAC, the same thing happens...fine for a few minutes and then it slows to about 60-70kps and becomes unwatchable. Stopping and then restarting the stream works for 3-5 mins and then the same problem begins again.
HELP!!!! My plan was to get a MAC MINI to hook up to my LCD TV to watch my slingbox. If it's not going to work the I am not going to bother with the expense.
I'm experiencing poor streaming when remote viewing over my MacBook Pro. I have ADSL capable of 500 kbs plus actual download speed. Upon connection, I get 200 to 300 at best on the Mac for a few minutes, after which it slows to 75 kbs. I've found that I can re-establish the better speed by disconnecting from the Sligbox and re-connecting, but after a few minutes, it slows again. I'm using a Slingbox Pro connected to the internet via Comcast cable and an Apple Airport Extreme. Oddly enough, my work PC laptop can stream at 300+ kbs without a problem. I'm running Leopard on the Mac. The problem is the same regardless of if I use wireless or direct ethernet connection with my Mac.
Yes I have the same problem too.
Mine ususally drops to 113Kbps and sits there unless I prod it by switching off and on again.
Anyone have any ideas?
I too Sling with a MacBook Laptop using a AT&T USB881 aircard. I have come to realize that it seems to be a common staple of speeds starting high then making a dramic drop. At late night I can get up to 800 Kpbs for a short period and adverage out to close to 300. However it will drop to almost 0 Kpbs at times.. At home I can get between 4500 - 6300 Kpbs and the video is great.
So my question is, what adjustments can I manually make to help either the streaming or video quality with low Kpbs? I don't know enough about video bit rate, video frame rate, etc. Perhaps someone can give me a couple of pointers in making some adjustments that might help with these slow streaming rate.
Hi how long you think it will be before all the carries make a big jump in their speeds?
Your data rate on your Aircard is 100% dependent on a number of things:
1.) Strength of the RF link between you and the nearest cell tower - the closer you are to the cell tower, the stronger the link and the faster the speed.
2.) Amount of voice call loading on the cell site. Voice calls get priority and as the number of calls goes up the amount of bandwidth allocated to wireless data access goes down. This is why at peak phone usage time, you'll get low bandwidth.
It does not surprise me that you see what you see. Cellular data cards are never intended to be someone's primary internet connection.
To answer your question: HSDPA which is what AT&T is using for high speed is the highest data rate available right now. HSDAP is capable of download speeds up to about 7 to 8 Mb/sec. But they haven't rolled out the network all that extensively yet - it's in process. It will gradually get better but they may not have every channel or every site in your area up on HSDPA yet.

Not sure what "reply with a quote" means or if it is different from a regular reply but never the less, Thanks for once again your great reply. However, is there anything I can do at this point to manually adjust my video to help make it a bit better with these low streams Kpbs or is it just the way it is? I don't except anything great but a slight improvement would be OK......Thanks again NA9D. Good job in trying to help all of us newbes!
Reply with quote will quote the post in your reply but it doesn't work with Safari
Anyhow, you can try messing with the encoding settings but it's really best to just let the Sling Optimizer take care of it. There really isn't a lot you can do, IMHO...

In my case the poor streaming is nothing to do with lack of Kbps - there are plenty of Kbps available but they are just not being used by Slingplayer!
I have fiddled about with the manual controls and managed to get better streaming sometimes - but I don't really know what I am doing and like David49 I need some pointers as to exactly what to adjust so that all the Kbps I have available are being called upon and actively used. I assume manual controls wouldn't be there at all unless they could be used to improve quality.
I hope there is someone out there who can explain what needs to be done.
Many factors can contribute to a low stream rate and with it bad quality of picture.
-ISP
-Network Config
-SB Firmware
-SlingPlayer settings
Easiest way to try and tune your picture would be try and set a hard bitrate in the preferences along with picture quality. Upgrading your FW also helps.
I've just posted a new thread on a similar subject.
On my PC I can set 1000 kbps as a hard bitrate (which is about right for my home internet connection's upload speed).
On my Mac it struggles on anything above 600. Everything is the same - same ISP at both ends, same wireless connection (and I see the same behaviour if I use wired networking anyway)
I would like to be able to manually bump up my resolution from the automatic settings, and view at 640x240, which works well on the PC and gives an excellent picture. But with the low effective bitrate I'm getting on the Mac, I can't.
The Mac has a superior screen and is a far nicer machine, so I'd rather use it as my portable telly, but the difference in the quality of the stream is pronounced between Mac and PC.
After putting up with extremely poor video on my iMac for too many months, I finally decided to experiment with the SlingPlayer Preferences yesterday. It seems that the loss of bandwidth is related to the use of the Optimizer. Or, on the Mac, the DE-Optimizer.
If you turn off the Optimizer, you should see an improvement in bandwidth. Unfortunately, you will need to manually turn off Control Mode every time you change channels. It turns out that Control Mode is linked to the Fast Start option which only functions when you have the Optimizer enabled. However, the improvement in video quality outweighs the annoying need to manually turn off the Control Mode.
In for a penny, in for a pound .... so, I continued to play with the other preferences. When I finished, my bandwidth consistently ran between 2000 and 4000 Kbps. Here are my settings:
General Tab: All warnings turned off. Automatically Reconnect to Last Slingbox: On.
Video Tab: Buffer: Automatic. SlingStream Optimizer: Off. Fast Start: Off. High Quality for LAN: On.
Encoding Tab: Optimize Stream: Manually. Video Bit Rate: 4096. Video Frames: Full Rate. i-Frame Interval: 5. Audio Bit Rate: 32. Video Resolution: 640x480. Video Smoothness: set 1/2 way between the lowest setting (smoother) and the first marker after the lowest setting.
Connection Tab: Untouched (Default Setting).
By the way, my iMac (OS X v10.5.2) is on my local area network and I'm using the ethernet connection not the wireless connection. So, if you're using wireless, you may need to tweak the Video Bit Rate on the Encoding tab slightly. If you do, use small changes +-128 points at a time. Once I found the best bit rate, I improved the quality of the video by adjusting the Video Smoothness.
Good luck with your changes ........
Sorry to sound like a complete novice, but how do I change the settings on the video tab buffer? I can't seem to access it. Here's a screen grab of what it looks like.

I've been experiencing problems with the audio being a second or so behind the video ever since I began using an Apple Time Capsule as my wireless device. Does anyone know how to adjust the settings to fix this problem? It happens even when I'm connected to my home network.
You need to close the connection to your slingbox by clicking the Stop button. Then, you'll have access to the video tab.
i have a mac mini and 3mbps adsl down, and i am pretty sure that
this is a bug with the sling player and we have to sit on our hands
for sling to get around to fixing it.
case in point, right now i am using the pc version with windows xp
connected to a 3g cell phone 400 kbps average and experiencing
no problems what so ever with streaming slowing down
i bet you can prove it to yourself by using boot camp to run the pc version
and the streaming problems will go away, i bet
THANK YOU FRANK!!!! For that totally useful and clear instruction above, where you went tab by tab and told us your settings. You are a STAR - I have joined the community just so I could thank you - I have no idea why it is working, but it is - after 11 months of frustration and rage at it stalling (airport extreme) it is now bloody fantastic!
Thanks again
Julie

I have 2 megabits upstream and when I watch my slingplayer remote from my laptop and there are no problems. I usually get 1.3 - 1.5 megabits depending on where I am. Usually hotels have crappy internet and I get 400-750 kb.
You're Welcome, Julie.
I get a lot of good info from the folks in this community and it's nice to be able to help out when I can.
