I have connected my slingbox AV to my DTivo with an SVideo cable and changed my Tivo video UP arrow setup to 480i. My Tivo is connected to my Sony LCD TV with an HDMI connection. I am not getting any video though I am getting audio. I spent a lot of time on the phone with tech support and he told me that I need to connect my Tivo to my TV with component cables not HDMI cables. Is this right? He also said that I needed to buy a slingbox solo, but he did not know about the 480i UP arrow setup on the tivo, so I'm not sure whether his advice was correct. I need help. Thanks, Helene

Do a search here for HDCP.  Some boxes don't output on other outputs when HDMI is used.  Unplug the HDMI and see if it works..

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

I disconnected the HDMI cable and still get a message that there is no video connection.

Is there some setting on the slingbox setup that I need to change?

Helene

btw thanks for your fast response

Here are some troubleshooting ideas..  Connect the SVid and/or composite from the sat receiver to the TV and see if you get a picture.  Connect the composite to the slingbox and run the setup for that input.

Hi,

Try playing around with the video settings of your TiVo,

I got lucky at 576p, was getting the no video at other resolutions (on Solo and Pro), I got the hint from Sling Support, they got it right,

My other resolutions didn't work on component

Hope it helps, tak care

I'm still having trouble with my slingbox av and my hd directivo. I got an article about setting the up arrow setting to 480i to use with the slingbox that implied that I could toggle between that setting and my current 1080i setting, but there is not video connection. Is this because the AV model doesn't allow this? If this is the case it would mean that I would have to set my tivo to record all the time in 480i and I wouldn't get any hi def video recorded on my tivo. It makes the whole thing useless. Is there a way to return the av or exchange it for one that actually works with my tivo?

Also, does anyone else believe that the tech support people don't really know anything about their product?

Speaking from experience, the DirecTV HD Tivo (HR10-250) will not output 480i video through the HDMI cable.  Nor will it output video through the composite or S-video connections when set to 480p, 720p, or 1080i.  You are on the right track by setting the Up Arrow toggle between 480i and 1080i.  When slinging, the resolution should be set to 480i, and when watching TV on you HDTV the resolution should be set to 1080i. (meaning you can't see video using the slingbox and HD video on your TV at the same time.)

Don't worry if the resolution is set to 480i when the Tivo is recording an HD program.  The program will be recorded in its native Hi-Def resolution no matter what the Tivo output resolution is.  When playing the recorded program, just set the resolution to 1080i to see the program in glorious HD on your Sony LCD.

You might want to consider upgrading to DirecTV's new HDDVR (HR20 or HR21).  (That is what I did) Not only will you have access to all of DirecTV's new MPEG4 HD channels, but all of the video outputs are live no matter what output resolution the receiver is set.

Hope this helps.

That is very helpful. I was going to junk my new slingbox, but now I can use it. I'll just switch video settings when I leave home. Fantastic. I'll probably keep my HD DTivo since I have a lifetime subscription. (one of the best bargains I've ever gotten since I bought it over 5 years ago). Thanks again. I've been trying to figure this out for weeks.

Sorry for the confusion, since HD was mentioned, I thought we were talking about a Solo or Pro with HD Connect,

Since you have an A/V, you should be using either a composite or an s video,

You shouldn't be having issues with HDCP / HDMI / output resolutions (480, 720, 1080), since you're using the composite or s video out from your TiVo,

I'd reset the A/V, maybe try to change the s video cable (or composite, but in rare cases the cables are defective), and rerun setup from scratch (maybe even reinstalling Slingplayer software), making sure cables are well plugged in (including ethernet), etc,

It's weird you're not getting an image with composite or s video (view that they are not HD, and shouldn't get the component / hdmi HDCP eventual aspect), and maybe try another STB (just to make sure it's not the TiVo) if you have another one

What they told you at support, " he told me that I need to connect my Tivo to my TV with component cables not HDMI cables" might be right in some cases, in the sense they want you to 'pass through' your Sling box with those cables, which you are not, since you have an A/V (you still can pass through the composite or s video on your A/V, which you don't need, as far as I understood you are connecting to your TV with HDMI)

" I'll probably keep my HD DTivo since I have a lifetime subscription. ", you should be able to pass your subscription to a new STB/Tivo, according to them

Hope you'll be able to solve! take care

What I'm using is: hdmi from tivo to tv; s-video/rca cables from tivo to slingbox;

I get video when I set the output on my tivo to 480i, but I can't set the up arrow settings to both 480i and 1080i and toggle back and forth on my computer/slingbox. I have to change my tivo settings to 480i. My understanding is that if I remember to reset my tivo settings to 480i every time I leave home I will be able to watch my tivo remotely on my computer.

Is there a better way?

What is STB/Tivo?

Thanks

Helene

You should be able to change the output resolution from 1080i to 480i while streaming with the slingbox by "pressing" the Up Arrow on your slingRemote.  That is what I had to do if I forgot the change the resolution to 480i before I left the house.  If I recall, you have to press the Up Arrow twice.  The first time just displays the current resolution and the 2nd time actually changes the resolution.

Hi

What is the "up arrow"? Is it on the computer "remote"? Is it the "channel up" button? Could I change the the resolution at a remote location even though there is no video? I know these are silly questions but I haven't succeeded in using it yet.

Thanks

Helene

Once you launch the Slingplayer and begin streaming the output from the source device (DirecTV HD Tivo, in this case), you will have control of the device using the on-screen SlingRemote and some keyboard shortcuts.  If you leave the Tivo in the 1080i mode, you will not be able to see any video on your computer, but you will still have control of the device (you should still be able to hear the audio from the HD Tivo w/o video).  Simply "press" the up-arrow on the slingremote, which is the button above the SELECT key with the arrow that is pointing UP (the cursor UP button on the keyboard will work also).  As I said before, I think you have to press the button twice before it will begin cycling.  If the resolution does not cycle through the ones you have selected, then there may be something displayed on the screen such as the program guide or the info banner (the up arrow toggle only works if there is nothing displayed on the screen).  If you think this might be the case, simply "press" the EXIT button and then try the Up arrow toggle again.

You may want to try some of these tips in front of the TV and HD Tivo with the original remote and the slingplayer running on your home network so that you make sure that everything is set-up correctly before you try it remotely and get frustrated if something goes wrong.

Thank you so much for your help and patience. I'll try it. However, what is the better version of HD Directivo?

Am happy you finally got some image,

I don't remember the TiVo remote controls (but I think there is one to change aspect ratio kind of quickly), had to give back mine as I couldn't get cablecards from my cable provider

What Bbraune is suggesting is a good idea, test / check at home by using the remote of the Slingplayer, you should be getting a virtual one that looks like the real one,

Or you'll have to remember every time to lower resolution before remote viewing,

Am ok with your hook up, don't want to get over complicated, I think it's still weird you're getting no video signal with other resolutions, since you are using svideo and rca, shouldn't influence; as the weak spot on some Set Top Boxes (STBs) is using both component (to Slingbox i.e.) and HDMI (to TV),

Don't know about the DirectTivo boxes, so can't be specific / of help, sorry..., I'd say a recent one, but it seems recent STBs with TiVo are giving the component / HDMI hickup for Sling users (eventhough I didn't have problems - apart resolution - with the TiVo I had, with the double hook up), or at least in some cases
