With SlingPlayer Mobile support for Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm, and soon Blackberry, there's no doubt Slingbox on the go is becoming an important avenue for folks to enjoy the benefits of TV on the go.

In a recent heated forum debate, it became clear that folks are looking for a resource to evaluate, review, and discuss SlingPlayer Mobile on the various mobile devices available, both past and present. Sling Media doesn't provide QA information for every cell phone in existence (whether they should or not isn't the point here), but folks here in the community are certainly running SPM on a huge number of non-listed devices and it seems like SlingCommunity could step up and get your experiences with SPM and a particular device in a place where others can easily find it.

My vision here is finding a place here on the site where we could load information for a specific mobile device... like the model number, specs, a photo, carrier if applicable, OS, etc. Then, if you're using SlingPlayer Mobile with that device (or have used it), you can share your experiences with how well it worked, what you thought of it, etc. Was it good? Was it sluggish? Were there picture problems? And so on.

It would be a massive undertaking to get this going (there are a ton of potential mobile devices), but I could be willing to do it if you all think its a good idea and valuable resource.

So my questions to you are:

Do you think a SlingPlayer Mobile Reviews section for specific devices would be a valuable resource?

Would you (personally) review SlingPlayer Mobile for the device you own or have used?

Would you (personally) volunteer your time to help get this resource going by adding in mobile information for devices based on a template I provide?

What is the make and model number of the device you use with SlingPlayer Mobile?

UPDATE: I really need to get feedback here, so I'm tossing in a free SlingCommunity T-shirt to a random individual that posts their feedback. Yay or nay, it doesn't matter as long as you're being honest. Last chance to enter - 3/31/07 11:59 PM CST.

Would this be for Phones only or other devices like an Axim for instance?

I would be glad to give feedback on my experiences with my devices.

Mobile phones would comprise the bulk of this, but PDAs are applicable in my mind as well.

I would find the reviews helpful.  I love to find new mobile devices that will run sling.

I would gladly review devices I have used or will use in the future.

I would volunteer to add information to a template.

I use a T-Mobile Shadow running the Windows Mobile version of Sling Mobile.  I have been able to successfully watch TV on the notoriously slow EDGE network, as well as on a wifi network.

I wish I could get the Symbian version to run on my E61.

Slingplayer mobile is GREAT. I KNOW BECAUSE I HAVE IT. I have a Tmobile DASH and downloaded the smartphone package from the site. WORKS BEAUTIFULLY. The $30 free is the only part that discerns me. Its the only service from SlingBox that you have to pay for. Other than that, AWESOME.

Busted for only reading the title of the thread.  I've added "on SlingCommunity" to the title so others hopefully won't make this mistake.

This is a perfect reply and exactly the kind of information I'm looking for. Thanks for your input leeg64!

I've posted in many other forums helping others get slingplayer working on the Sprint Motorola Q.  I wouldn't mind reviewing SPM on devices I've used it with, nor would I mind sharing any issues, ideas, or experiences I've had with other users in a forum dedicated for said things.  It would certainly make it very easy for new SPM users to find instructions on how to get it working with their mobile.

BTW, I'm always showing off SPM & slingplayer for pc when I'm out & about.  I own 3 slingboxes now (2 sling a/v's & 1 pro).  It's fun to demo it in an Apple store - it never fails to get a "what the heck?" reaction from people who still have no idea you can do such a thing!  There's gotta be at least 20 people who've gone out & bought a slingbox as a result of me :)

I probably wouldn't bother too much with reviews of specific devices, only the one device I have which is a Nokia E90.

I would gladly review SlingPlayer on my E90, it works but there are some issues.

I would volunteer to add information to a template regarding the experiences on my device.   I would also happily provide feedback on beta versions, or even device specific bug fixes if they were offered up prior to general release.

Cheers,

Steve

I have palm mobile running on my lifedrive works great sans volume control since ther is no hardware volume control on my life drive

Hey Matt.

I'd be glad to review Slingplayer mobile (GA/Beta), especially since I now have a Samsung SCH-i760 (WM6). I've been using  both cell-broadband and wifi access to the slingbox. Both work great, except for the fact that when I shift from portrait landscape mode, the image splits (e.g. odd rows shift left and even rows shift right.  To resolve, I just tap the menu.

Thanks.

I'm running SPM on a Samsung Blackjack 1 WM5.  I'd be happy to assist in reviews and think that such a resource would be invaluable.  Lord knows that's the type of thing I was looking for here on what SPM could and couldn't do.  (Hardware volume controls, favorite settings, etc.)

February 13, 2008 5:56 PM

I am also eager to help. I am running SlingPlayer Mobile 1.5 with Samsung i607, ATT 3G.

As an example a sticky table comparison between mobile devices would be very nice. When choosing an ideal phone for Sling, there are several considerations, like form factor, screen resolution and size, wireless carrier network device/network offerings 3G, availability, etc...

There is nothing more valuable than taping into real users willing to contribute.

Thank you,

Wilson

I tried mobile on my Treo 650 on T-mobile and it just hangs when I hit play. I have to soft start the phone.

Busted again for not really reading the first post, but this comment really is the essence of what I'm trying to capture with the reviews area.

For the person who owns a 650 and wants to know what to expect with SlingPlayer Mobile, they could travel to the Palm Treo 650 Reviews page on the site and find this and other comments about how it works. Seems valuable to me, but we're going to need a lot more than 7 yay-sayers to kick start this.

As an example, here's what I'm thinking the page looks like:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AT&T Tilt (8925) - Windows Mobile 6 Professional

  • Carrier: AT&T
  • Manufacturer: HTC
  • OS: Windows Mobile 6 Professional
  • Processor: Qualcomm MSM7200 400 MHz

THIS IS ONLY AN EXAMPLE. PLEASE DO NOT ACTUALLY REVIEW THE TILT

Matt, I think it's a great idea.  We are all always changing/upgrading phones.  I am sure most Sling'ers would love to know before buying a phone if it will work with their beloved Slingboxes.

Slingbox ProHD Slinging Comcast cable and HD via Comcast HSI using AirLink Powerline adapters; Slingbox Pro and Classic Slinging Sunddenlink Cable and D* HR21 via Sunddenlink HSI, using Linksys Gaming adapter. 2 Slingcatchers set up to use Slings.

I'd be happy to review running SPM on WM5, I use it on my axim x51v. I'd also volunteer to help anyone with problems or questions about slinging on a pda. I've learned from these forums and I like to pass the knowlege on.

Short answer, Sign me up!

Happy to help in any way with feedback, reviews, etc. I run SPM on a Nokia N95 8GB (in addition to Win & Mac). There are a few SPM bugs on this model , as acknowledged on the download page, but they dissapear in full screen mode. I am actually very happy with the image quality, and when plugged into a TV, I feel the image is better than from the win or mac machines. I have also successfully slinged my content from several locations across the world.

I'd be happy to review my stuff.  SlingPlayer mobile on Palm, Windows, etc.

Definitely

Would you (personally) review SlingPlayer Mobile for the device you own or have used?

Yes

Would you (personally) volunteer your time to help get this resource going by adding in mobile information for devices based on a template I provide?

Yes

What is the make and model number of the device you use with SlingPlayer Mobile?

HTC Advantage X7500 WM5 (Slingplayer very choppy, would love a fix for this problem, imagine slingplayer working great on a 5" mobile device!) It it true that Slingplayer uses directdraw, it needs to use the ATI Imageon driver for this device.

and

HTC Universal WM5 (slightly better than the Advantage but still not perfect)

I guess I've changed my mind.  Seems like these forums have been pretty dead for the last month or so.  Not a lot of posts going on...   Definitely not a lot of answers to posts from other members or Sling.   Doesn't really seem worthwhile to review things.

It's a shame.  I used to spend a lot of time monitoring these forums.

I think it would help if Sling had more of a presence here, helping people when other community members don't know the answer or don't respond.  Just my opinion.....
