Hello everyone,

Just got my Slingbox (A/V). I must say its an awesome product.

A have a quick question about the capabilities: Let's say I'm watching Sports Center on ESPN. They alert me that next up is a SuperBowl recap show (GOO GIANTS!!). So, I want this content on my laptop to stay. Is there any software that lets me record what I watch on Slingbox and put it on my laptop?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi gibbs0828,

First Welcome to the SlingCommunity. There are some software options available to record the Slingbox, but Sling Media is coming out with their own Sling Player 2.0 that will do Clip+Sling. Do a search for Recording and Clip+Sling and you will see several articles and forum post regarding recording.

Also, do yourself a favor and go to Sling.com and register.

Brandon,

Thanks for the welcome. The sling products have been really impressive. Setup was a breeze.

I have already looked into Clip+ Sling, but if I am correct, that is only for clips and it is only in the Sling Player 2.0 which is not out yet...

So, I should just search the forums for 'recording'?

Additionally, do you have any news on the sling for Blackberry. I think I signed up for the beta program... Dying for it!!

Thanks,

Matt

FYI, you can select multiple forum categories on the initial post..

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

Thanks ryandh!

A  little confused with the recording...

Apparently, it is the Windows Media Encoder software...

Are these the correct steps:

'Here are the steps that I used (or pretty close, anyway). Make sure SlingPlayer is connected, Start Windows Media Encoder; then:

1) Click the "Properties" icon below the main menu bar. I have supplied "figure" thumbnails with links below for convenience.

2) Click the "Sources" tab. Make sure the "audio" box is checked and set to the default audio device. Make sure that video is set to "Screen Capture" (first figure). Click the "Configure" button beside the "Screen Capture" select box and set the "Capture Source" to "SlingPlayer" (second figure). Click OK.

3)Click the "Output" tab. Click "Encode to File" and set a file name (third figure).

4) Click the "Compression" tab. I find for best results it is best to select "Windows Media Server (streaming)". You can try other destinations, but unless you have a fast processor you may find that your captured video or audio chopped or skipped if your processor can't keep up with the incoming video stream. For video, Live Broadcast Video seems to give the best results (experiment - you may do better). For audio, I normally select FM quality audio. The tradeoff is usually this - the better the quality of video or audio, the more time the encoder will take to encode the stream and therefore * might * lead to skipping frames if the encoder can't keep up. Your mileage may vary, but these settings (for me) seem to give the most consistent results (see fourth figure).

5) Click the "Video Size" tab. Here, personal taste will dictate what kind of output to produce. For this example, I set the options to basically capture the entire SlingPlayer window, but you will most likely want to change the settings to only capture the video portion of the display. Again, experiment to your own liking (figure five).

6) Click "Start Encoding" to begin recording. Usually, the Encoder will minimize. When you are ready to stop encoding, re-size the Encoder window (which will pause encoding) and Click "Stop Encoding." Hint: you can also set the encoder to automatically stop based upon encoding time or by encoded file size.

One other thing - make sure all other programs are minimized (or better, closed) before starting encoding. If you start encoding and another program is "over" the SlingPlayer (z-order), then when you start encoding you will capture that portion of the application overlapping SlingPlayer - not what you want.'

Thanks again

Matt

Take a look at this thread.  I have this working pretty well on my box.

http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/26536/New-Slingbox-Recorder/?highlight=slr

It records to the PC in .asf format and can then be converted and burned if you like or played in a player that plays .asf format.    Like VLC player.

You will also want to check out Applian's AT-Large Recorder.

Though there is a charge, I still prefer it to the SLR/Slinger recording software mentioned above.  One of the biggest advantages is the ability to schedule multiple future recording times.

For some reason my response did not go through...

I downloaded the demo of the At-Large Recorder software.

How do you set it up though? Still confused...

Thanks,

Matt

There's a free online (in a browser) recorder/control coming out.   It's super easy and you can do full recordings and clips and save them to your local computer or online.  Demo'd by a beta tester in Feb.
