On February 17, 2009, the USA WILL switch over to DIGITAL on all of its broadcast stations. My question is... WILL THE SLINGBOX TUNER BE AFFECTED? IF SO, HOW? IS IT EASILY RESOLVED WITH A CONVERTOR BOX? Appreciate the feedback.

If the switch actually happens and there is digital only, for $39.95 you can get a converter.

The problem with the Tuner is it won't control an external device, it doesn't have an IR interface.

Do you solely rely on over-the-air signals, or do you have basic cable?

i have BASIC CABLE going straight from the wall ( coaxial split from wall to TV and the other to slingbox receiver, no cablebox anywhere ).

From what i have read, i wish i could find the link, the government is putting basic cable standard switching to a later date, set for 2010 or 2012.  So you can still hook up a slingbox tuner to your analog line and get a signal before you need a converter box for it.

From my understanding, there is nothing stated that cable operators will be forced to cease transmission of analog signals through their networks. Switching to digital only systems is the choice of the provider at this time.

For now, cable operators can choose to receive digital feeds from and retransmit them as analog stations through existing networks as a service to their customers. Those who have providers that continue to offer this service will see no interruption in service from their Slingbox Tuner. Should your cable provider choose to eliminate analog stations in their network (fat chance of that happening real soon, but contact your provider for details) will no longer be able to use Slingbox Tuner.

ostate, I'd love to investigate the link you may have read in case I missed a memo somewhere. Can you see if you can dig it up?

I am pretty sure in the new ads onTV regarding the transition, they state "if you don't have cable or sat.......you will need a STB box" I read somewhere that cable companies will be transmitting analog until 2012 (by law).  I think there was some info on Dave's site about this today and Wal Mart will begin selling the boxes in the next week. So to sum it up my understading if you have cable coming into your house you won't need to worry, it's just people that use "rabbit ears" to get their tv picture that will need to switch.

The guys over and Engadget just posted info on this :" First off, you won't even be affected by the cutover if you receive your local broadcast stations via any means other than over-the-air."

The more I learn about this it has been really poorly handled by the FCC or whoever is responsible.  My understanding is anyone with cable or satellite won't be affected at all.  I've seen TV spots that look like they're sponsored by cable companies but I don't know if they are trying to get people to switch to cable or what??  I have seen some info that some cable companies are reducing the channels they offer on analog, requiring digital to get more channels.  I think the FCC is only requiring them to continue locals on analog..

I've got a Sony HDTV that doesn't have an HD tuner.  I use it with a Tivo HD so it's really not an issue but I've thought about getting an OTA tuner to have that option.  I looked at the Magnavox tuner at WalMart the other night.  When the kid working there asked me if I needed any help I asked him a couple questions and he suddenly got busy..  (I'm mostly a fan of WM, met Sam Walton shortly before he died, but am saddened by the current state of the stores).  This doesn't really have anything to do with individual retailers though, I'm sure Best Buy will have the same issue.

These boxes seem to be a waste.  They output SD only so they don't even have a function for people that have HDTVs without a tuner.
