Why do I have to reset my Netgear WGR614 router just about everyday to get my slingbox tuner to work remotely?  It is all set up for remote viewing correctly--I have spent hours on the phone with slingbox support and they really don't help.  I have learned a lot about port forwarding and such, but I am not a computer person by any stretch of the imagination so please respond to me in simple terms if you might have some idea of what is going on.  Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Linda,

Folks are going to think your post is a setup for me.

I just posted my setup on the SlingCommunity's sister site the OpenRouter site.

You  can read my post here, but bottom line is if you setup the ports manually, you should not have this problem.

I read through your post and it is a bit Greek to me.  I have gone into my router and typed in the ports manually many times.  The next day, the whole thing is gone until I reset the router.  Are you saying that there is something else I should do?

Sorry if it is confusing.

Do this.

Get your Slingbox, turn it over and you will see on the label the MAC address of the slingbox. It should  be something like  00:13:xx:xx:xx, Write this number down.

Then go back to the article and read the part that says: "how to setting up all my devices. The first thing I wanted to do was to give everything that had a static or assigned address the same adress in the new modem.

I clicked on the LAN IP Setup and then the "Add" tab. There, I could enter the MAC addresses I had used on my old router. This is where saving the web pages of my old router came in handy. I opened up the page that contained all of the old address settings (in a new window) and started copying and pasting the setup."

Enter a name and the MAC address you wrote down, assign it an IP address of soething like 192.168.1.237 and then don't forget to click "Apply"

The go to the "Port Forwarding / PortTriggering" tab  (see the article again) and assign the port, (usually 5001) to the IP address you set above.

Then unplug your slingbox, plug back in and re-run the setup wizard and make sure it uses the address and port you setup in your router.

You should be good to go. I do this on all my SBs and never have the problems others talk about here.

After reading your article again, I did look for the Mac address and saw that it was already in the LAN IP set up area of my router with the correct IP address for the slingbox.  The slingbox has been assigned port 5001, or 5002, or 443 at various times, all in efforts to get it to keep working.  Just tonight, I have had to reset everything twice.  So, you think I should unplug the Slingbox and plug it back in?  I haven't done that before.

IF you do the above, then unplu/plug in the Slinbox it should be assigned the address. If not, then push in the reset button on the back of the slingbox for 5 secs and re-run the setup wizard.

I really appreciate your thoughts, but it didn't work.  I reset everything and, one minute, the slingbox appeared on the portforwarding menu, the next minute, it was gone.  I am so frustrated.

One more thing.  When I attempt to re-add the slingbox to the portforwarding menu, it seems that it is still there, but hidden, because it won't allow me to use the port on which the slingbox was assigned.  It "reappears" if I reset the router.  Why does it keep disappearing?

I think your router is fried. Time to get a new router. I've seen this in other bad routers before as well.

Hi Brandon,

First of all I want to say thank you for the great article that you wrote about Netgear WGR614 . I have the Netgear WPNT834 with the latest firmware 1.0.51 and noticed that consistently every 10-15 days locks up, not sure if UPnP can conflict after install. When my parents power cycle "Netgear only" problem goes away.

I current don't have static routes setup, however after reading your article I will. Also at my parents place they have the Netgear Skype Phone SPH200W , occasionally looses wireless connection with WPNT834. Current wireless channel in WPNT834 is set to "auto", is it best to choose a specific channel?

The WPNT834 GUI is very similar to WGR614, you can access the full WPNT834 GUI here

Any other suggestions?

Wilson

Usually problems with losing connectivity result from a rouge 2.4GHz device in the area. Either a microwave, baby monitor, cordless phone or something similar. Next time it goes out, try to find out what things just got turned on or if you got a call on the coreless ect.. Or listen for neighbor's phones ringing. That could be the culprit as well.

Hi Phil,

Thank you for the reply. Yes in the location there is another regular 2.4GHz phone. However what puzzles me is that I saw several times the skype phone loose connection and reconnect eventually, when nothing else was in use that could interfere.

I bet it's a neighbor or something. Try changing channels That sometimes helps. Get a wifi stumbler or detector to tell you what other networks are in your area and see which channels are most open.

This is a great little tool to use to find out what's nearby on wireless.
