This may be old hat for some, but it's a new experience for me. My slingbox is in the States and I'm living in London. We recently had an ice storm in Michigan and the power was out for some hours. Now my slingbox doesn't work. I've had my sister unplug my (linkys) router, (Comcast) modem and slingbox (A/V) for a few minutes and then plug everything back on but to no avail. The two lights are solid but I still can't connect. I get an error message saying my slingbox may not be connected. Is there something I'm missing? Do I have to reset the whole thing? I won't be back in the states until May, but I'd really like to watch TV before then... Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Travis

Can your sister watch it locally? What you're describing doesn't sound normal.

I've had a couple power outages that everything recovered fine.  The only thing I can think of is maybe you're using UPnP?

Is there a computer where the SlingBox is?  Have your sister load logmein.com or another remote control software so you can troubleshoot it.

Have you checked your router to make sure the port is still forwarding properly?

Hey guys, thanks for the advice.  My sis had to travel on business until Saturday so I've been stuck here with no TV till she gets back.  I have a question though.  Someone told me I should ping my slingbox to see if it's working.  How would I go about doing that?  I tried that http://srs thingy but I get a message that says "error=..."  Any help would be appreciated.

Okay, got it working.  I just had my sis unplug the slingbox and router for 5 mins (the power, not the ethernet cables).  Repower the router until it set itself up (3 mins. or so) and then repowered the slingbox and bam!  it was working.  Thanks for the help guys, much obliged.  As they say over here, "cheers".

Is there anyone that knows if you could or how you could do the same thing remotely.  Unfortunately I don't have a sister Smile to plug and unplug my Slingbox located in PA while I am in Thailand.

A remote reboot device will work or have a time for your slingbox to power cycle it once or twice a day. Do a search on ebay for "remote power reboot"

Good idea and on Ebay will only cost me $73 plus postage BUT if the problem connecting to the Slingbox is the router then will this really be a solution since it is in effect a router ? (at least based upon the verbage from the seller).

The devices are not routers. You'll probably have to forward some ports our your router to the devices so you can control them remotely though.

OK, got it.  But would I not be better off with a device like an X-10 that I could use to turn on and off my Modem, Router and Slingbox using the telephone line via Skype from overseas?  I am not trying to be obtuse but am just thinking of a way to "reboot" everything without getting into more router problems.

In another life I had Direct Way (now Hughes Net) Satellite Internet and I still have nightmares of configuring a router to work with that beast.

It appears to me from reading other post on the fourm that basically a re-set is just powering off a device and then powering it back on to re-establish a connection / operation.

X-10 would work as well. But those devices require a local computer to be on at all times to do the controlling. These devices would not require that.

And I'm not sure if you can tell the X-10 device to turn off then on your router. I think you'll need access to your network to tell it to power back on. Some of the remote reboot devices can turn off then on again with only one input signal. Or, a fancy one will ping a device and if it can't reach it, turn it off then on again. But, that's getting expensive.

And yes. All you're doing is turn off and on the slingbox to reset it.

Well another road block.  X-10 no longer sells their telephone line X-10 controller.  They have gone to completely PC based controlling.  Therefore if I am going to solve my problem it looks like Phil Pham's suggestion of a  remote reboot device will have to be the way to go.

My only concern is that if I have to use my router to control any of these devices (remote reboot device or switchable UPS) I don't see anyway to reset my router if it fails me.

I may have to go the remote PC control route and keep my computer running all the time just so that I can access my router to reset it in the event if fails.

If you're worried about your router needing to be reset I would suggest a couple of solutions.

1. If your router remote administration interface is locking up but you still have access to your network, a remote reboot device on that will be fine. But, you'll need a device that offers an option to turn off and on with just one click. Instead of one that turns off a device with one click then turns on with another click. (very cheap)

2. If your router locks up completely and you have no access to any network activity, You can get a remote reboot device that pings your router then powers off and on the router. (expensive)

3. Or my top choice. Get a better router. Good routers will not need rebooting and should not be locking up. How else do companies websites stay online 24/7. A decent business grade router can be had for as little as a hundred dollars for a used one.

Could you suggest a brand and model.  To be perfectly honest with you insuring that the Slingbox works 24/7 is a small price to pay when you spend six months a year outside of the US.

Thanks in advance.

BTW.  X-10 no longer sells a telephone controller but this company does:

I've had a DLink DIR-130 for the past 8 months w/o any problems. I currently working abroad as well for months at a time. I probably use the slingbox for about 2-3 hours a week. If you use it for about as much as I am, you should be fine with that router. There is only one caveat with it that I've found. The dynsdns link doesn't update correctly. Other than that, it works great.

If you are using your slingbox more than that, I would look into a router that has a metal case and a fan such as the offerings from Zywall. Those will run you a little bit more, but can withstand the abuse a slingbox can put on your network.

Thank you.Laughing

I feel like a junkie without a fix since my Slingbox has been out for a month now, but I return to the States in three weeks and will attempt to make it as bullet proof as I can.Wink

If you want to be extra careful, put a $10 24hr timer on your router and have it reboot twice daily or something.

I've had similar problems with power failures.  The issue is the DSL modem needs to connect before the router, so when the power comes back on and they both restart at the same time, no connectionCry.  My solution, I've got the modem and router on a UPS.  So far this has worked well.Laughing
