I thought I read that Sling Media was going to market its own HD Converter Box.  My coupons have arrived - but I find no mention of the HD Converter Box on its site.  Any hints about where or when this will be available?

Even if it was available it is not on thier list of acceptable providers or products.

From their FAQ:

Can I use my coupons to purchase any TV converter box?

No. The government will provide a list of coupon-eligible converter boxes and participating retailers here. You may also ask participating retailers whether TV converter boxes in their stores can be purchased with the $40 government coupon.

Providers:

Certified converter boxes are available from both national and local retailers. Call ahead to confirm availability of coupon-eligible converter boxes on the day you plan to shop.
National Retailers
Converter boxes can be purchased at any of these national retailers currently participating in the program:
  • Wal-Mart
  • Circuit City
  • RadioShack
  • Best Buy
Locate participating national retailers in your area by completing the form below.
Online and Telephone Retailers
Converter boxes can also be purchased online or by telephone and can be shipped directly to your home.

I thought the Sling was the Echostar TR-40??  Just with a Sling logo?

edit..

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/hands-on-with-the-echostar-tr-40-and-tr-50-converter-boxes/

The TR-50 looks kinda cool.  The issue I have with the boxes I've seen is they don't have HD outputs so they're strictly for use with a SD TV.  I've got 2 HD tubes that don't have OTA tuners built in.  I could have gotten some use from one of these boxes with component output but I've got Tivo HDs on both of them now..

edit #2..

Looks like the TR-50 has HDMI and component output but I'm not sure about the 40..

According to the signage around CES, the Echostar/Sling Media TR-40 will be eligible for the government coupons. However, considering the Sling version has not yet been released to retail (not sure about the Echostar one), you cannot currently use the coupons on them. Coupons are good for a few months, so you do have a bit of time to wait.

I assume that when the boxes are released they will be added to the approved list that Brandon provided. Looking at the CECB list, the Echostar TR-40 is on it, so it's probably only a matter of time until the Sling branded version of it gets on there, too.

Can you connect one of these DTV Tuner converter boxes to a Slingbox A/V or Pro (older NTSC model). Is Sling Media going to provide the remote IR codes. or is there some other way to change channels?

It is assumed so but we don't know for sure yet. My theory is a dish remote will work. The box was shown with what looked like a standard dish remote..

You'd think we'd know by now! The federal TV Converter Box Coupon Program www.dtv2009.gov is in full swing, with certified boxes now for sale at major US retailers, but there is still no "Audio/Video Setup" Configuration guidance from Sling Media - none of the boxes are listed in the slingbox setup routine.

FWIW, I've tried to get a new Zenith DTT900 to work with my Slingbox Pro (AV input), but could find no IR code to work. My hunch is its the same for all the boxes.

Sling Media really by now should be providing some guidance.

April 27, 2008 12:29 PM

Well, Sling hasn't come out with a new software version or remote update for a while, as far as I remember since we knew anything about these boxes..

I assume you tried all the zenith codes? VCRs, DVD players, etc??

Yes, tried them all. Nothing worked. I also could find no guidance/support on the Sling Media website for those of us with SBs now cashing in our government coupons and moving over to on-air digital, which is really quite good now in most US markets.

Hopefully they will support them but when it comes down to it they're not really obligated to. They're coming out with a new model with a new tuner and the market of people that actually use OTA is pretty small comparatively.

Worst case, you can make your own remote if you want it bad enough.

It'will be interesting to see how this turns out. Folks that read this site are more educated on this than most. Your regular user or "normal" person that I know, have no idea about the chages coming up.

We've got that model in the office and the remote is in our queue, though it's probably worth mentioning we prioritize scanning based on demand.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Since the DTT900 is in your queue I won't return it to Radio Shack, where its one of 2 units they are selling under the NTIA TV Converter Box Program www.ntiadtv.gov/cecb_list.cfm

I've got one more coupon to use. Would be interested to know if you've scanned any of the other converter boxes on the list at the above link.

April 28, 2008 7:49 PM

my coupons are getting ready to expire in less than a month. Any comments on which converter box to get. I just don't see the sling/echostar version being released in time for me to use my coupons.

I have been writing about this since my coupons were sent. The major stores are not carrying more than one model - so there may be little choice unless we buy on-line from a 2nd tier store.

Suggestions would be helpful.
