Hi all,

I will be going to Israel in about three weeks and plan to set up my Slingbox so I can watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs. There are two options for me.

1 - Pay Internet access fees at the motels at night

2 - Use a Blackberry 8300 from Verizon. With this I have access all the time, virtually everywhere in the country and no additional bandwidth or roaming charges!

My concern is whether or not the GPRS connectivity will be good enough for getting a Sling signal, let alone a fast enough signal to watch a fast action hockey game. Has anyone here used a cell phone for Sling connectivity in Israel (or Jordan for that matter)? If so, what was the quality of the signal?

I've been able to watch games at 300-400 kbps while here in the US, but that's a small hop on the Internet, not halfway around the World!

 Thoughts??

 Robert

The distance is not a factor. But GPRS is. Your aren't getting 300-400 kbps over GPRS. That's more like a 3G or UMTS speed. GPRS gives you something like 56kbps type speeds.

Now, I would be VERY careful and look at the fine print of my terms. Data almost always incurs roaming charges when overseas. And it's fairly expensive too. People have run up phone bills in the thousands when going overseas and not realizing how expensive data roaming is. You may not pay roaming for voice, but I'd be willing to bet you do for data.

Back to speed, it would all depend on the network in Israel.

Thanks for the response, and the concern. I asked the guy three times at Verizon's International dept. and he assured me that since I had the "all you can consume" data plan here in the USA, that data would also be all you can consume with the Blackberry World Phone.

But that's a real bummer to hear about the GPRS speeds being so low. Makes me need to seriously rethink the internet access again!

I would double and triple check that data plan details. I've never heard of an all you can consume international data plan. It's not treated like voice at all. Whether you use the phone for Slinging or not, I would seriously check to be sure as it's very expensive typically.

And yeah, GPRS speeds won't work for Singing...

Hahaha please do use your phone over there for slinging, when you come back we'll all get a great story of "how Verizon screwed me out of $15,000 in a week". Yes, the data plan is unlimited to the Blackberry world phone, with "world phone" only meaning it works all over the world. The iPhone is also a world phone, but that unlimited data plan would charge you insane money per kb if using in Israel. Even with unlimited data with Verizon, data costs 2 cents per minute in CANADA, forget Europe... Data will NOT be unlimited when using that phone across the world, I'd bet my life savings on it.
