The quality is much better. But it is still 640x480. If you're looking for a big difference, I would wait till the Slingbox Pro HD comes out in a few months. You'll have true HD streaming. And it seems that all your network gear is ready for it already as well.
I bought a Slingbox back when they first came out (so I could watch the winter olympic hockey at work); it's been sitting in a box for a few years now (long story; got disconnected during an AV system reorganization). I recently got it out and hooked it back up. In this time, we've upgraded a number of things to HD (DirectTivo HD, for example), and upgraded our home network. In particular, I've got 802.11N and Gigabit switches in my house, and most of our slingbox watching is at home (e.g., watching movies or the Daily Show in bed at night). So, I'm wondering if there are any noticeable difference between the guts (and thus performance) of the original slingbox and the new ones. Would the video quality with, say, a Slingbox SOLO (using component inputs) be better on my laptop than the video quality using the old slingbox (and SVideo)? I don't mind upgrading, I just don't want to do it if it's not worth it. Thanks for any pointers or comments.
The quality on the 2nd gen boxes are better, but it depends on where you mostly watch from.
For instance if you watch alot on your LAN and have HD hookups, you may want to wait for the Pro-HD.
If you watch mostly remotely and you don't have a fast upload speed then you won't get any advantage.
Or, if you are like me and sling from hotels with bad speeds, it won't help to buy a better SB.
