suddenly, the speed of connection on my slingbox dropped from 400 kbps to 125 kbps...the quality of video suffered a lot...i was tryingn to port forward my router to port 5001 as someone suggested. Problem is the ip address showing in my slingbox and on my router are different. does this need to be changed and how do i do it?

also, how do i change the port on the slingbox? Network settings is greyed out for me. when i installed the software, i was at someone's place...is that why this is the case?

Are you getting that speed when you are at the same location as the slingbox as well? Please describe your network setup.

i'm connected thru a belkin router...slingbox is remote....the speed fluctuates a lot....it remains at 400 kbps for 5 min andgoes back to 75-100 kbps....and the video goes to pot....

First a couple of caveats.

If you can connect remotely the problem is not the port forwarding. If that was incorrect you would not be able to connect at all.

Network setting will be grayed out if trying to change them remotely. You have to do that from your LAN.

How is your LAN access? Does it work good there? Can anyone check to make sure it's not a LAN problem?

How about a PING to your Slingbox? Can you ping and does it give back a good consistent reply?

Have you tried some speed tests? Http://www.dslreports.com/stest do a test at the location of your slingbox and the location you are streaming to and report those numbers here.
