I've been wanting to buy a slingbox for my home in the UAE (Abu Dhabi).  I have a 1Mbs line from Etisalat.  From what I've read till now some people have been able to setup and use their slingbox in UAE (outside freezones) and some havnen't.  Would appreciate input on whether it is possible to setup the slingbox in UAE, outside of freezone areas, and if it is then the applicable procedures also.

I would also GREATLY appreciate any feedback on slingbox usage in UAE.  Is it working okay with 1 Mbs line?  Does Etisalat block the ports required?

Please let me know your experience - I would love to purchase a slingbox since Orbit has now cancelled its ESPN channel and I can no longer get the NFL games.

I just returned from the US with a new setup and it seems to be working fairly well. The picture quality isn't good enough to view full screen as it was in the US, but it is acceptable in a smaller window. The streaming is generally good with minimal stops and stutters. No problem with blockage.

I have the 1mb service from Etisilat.I'm temped to upgrade to the next higher level but suspect the problem is with upload speed. The highest I get is around 160 kbps and knowing Etisilat it's anybody's guess if the upload would really improve with the higher data rate plan.

If anyone with the 2mb or 4mb plan would care to comment??

2mb line upload from the States 4mb line here in Dubai streaming averaging around 800 kb/s
Picture quality good.

Found that by adjusting the setting in the Sling player rather than the default setting gave a much better picture, big improvement in text on screen. Have noticed that  it does not seem to matter much if you place a lower Video Bit rate the important setting is video resolution

I overlooked this when initially setting up and sure Im not Robinson Cruesoe in this department

Go to sling player/Player/Sling Player Options/Encoding / select Button manually adjust stream parameters(advanced) then select Video resolution/ 640 x 480

I have my UAE sling box on Du 2Mbit and it works okay - on other Du lines i get up to abour 350 Kbps - and via etisalat - 200-350 - but most often about 200 kbps.

Etisalat does some IP proxying so i dont know if you can actually get access to your slingbox - but Du supplies unfiltered and unfirewalled direct IP addresses....
