Are you slinging Czech TV?

My wife's grandmother is visiting us in Canada from Prague very soon and I want to sling Czech TV so she can continue to watch the TV shows she loves.

We plan to buy a slingbox and install it in her relatives' house.

If you are slinging Czech TV, could you tell me: Where did you get your slingbox? What receiver do you plug yours into? Cable or terrestrial? Do the remote codes work okay?

I'd really appreciate your help on this - especially as there is no support yet from SlingMedia for the Czech Republic and the family members I am going to need to send it to will likely not have done this before.

I expect I'll need a slingbox with a local tuner and an input that can take from a cable provider. This way she can view any of the terrestial channels at her leisure and she can opt to look at whatever her son is watching on cable. Which slingbox should we buy? Would one sold in the UK work? What adapters would I need to buy?

Thanks,
Martin.

I might be able to help. I have slingbox from UK I use in Slovakia (which is pretty much the same as it used to be one country). If you want to use local cable (as I do) and use built-in tuner, you have to get the UK version, the US/Canada NTSC tuner would not work with such input. The only adapter you need is for the UK plug - continental plug is different from the one used in UK. These are easy to buy - I got one at the airport.

It works nicely, the only negative is that UK slingboxes are more expensive....

Great, thanks a lot! :)

Which slingbox did you buy?

Did you get it mail order from the UK and did they post to Slovakia? If so, where did you buy it from and how long did it take to arrive?

Thanks again, M.

I am slinging from Romania (PAL country) and the internal tuner is working fine. I have a PRO box, US version. No problem. Although the internal tuner works well, I still prefer the A/V input for it is better in terms of image definition. The A/V signal comes from an old Toshiba VCR which happenes to respond properly to one of the Slingbox's built-in infrared codes (lucky me!). You will need a strong upload in Prague (at least 400 Kbs real, that is a minimum of 500 nominal). You may wish to have a look on the thread that I've started last year and see a few images (they are somewhere in the beginning); this should give you a reasonably accurate image about how it should look like. I've said 'should' not 'will' look, meaning that it will depend on amny factors like : the Czech provider, the router, the Slingbox's quality... those images are 'printscreens' of my Slingplayer, the box being, as I've said, an NTSC one using either its tuner or a PAL A/V input. If you need more informations, you can send me a PM at any time, I'll do all may best to help you. The thread is 'SLINGING FROM ROMANIA'. Although it is mainly in Romanian, the images speak for themselves without any language.Good luck !

Slinging from Romania and watching in Canada

Thanks Louis.

I wrote to Slingmedia about his as well. Their rep said:

We have not yet launched in Czech Republic and nor do we provide support there. Consequently our partners don't ship there yet. We are expanding across Europe through 2008 so please keep checking for news.

(She's here just for the summer, if we think we can get it to work we're not waiting!)

Hi Martin - it will work there as it is a PAL box. However, we may not yet support the local Czech set top boxes yet (remote control codes).

1) Can anyone help me work out an answer to that?

2) Which slingbox should we buy? I am assuming Slingbox Pro?

PRO box will definitely work, but I actually have UK version of slingbox classic. Not sure you can still buy it. About the purchase - I live in the UK so I bought it locally and then took it with me when I went home. They probably won't ship it abroad... I would disagree with LuisRO regarding the upload speed, my parent's ADSL is only 385 up, but I'm able to sling to the UK at this speed so the image quality is acceptable.

Thanks, any clues about the remote control codes? If I get this wrong then I suspect we'll not be able to change channels!

I'm confused a bit, I thought you are going to use the internal turner (with cable) of the slingbox - in that case you don't need RC codes.

May 30, 2008 2:14 PM

Ah! Good point. So, is the worst case scenario that we'd be able to select a channel on tuner or tune into cable, but not be able to select a channel on cable?

??? Internal tuner can of course change channels.... No problem there.

Ok... so the slingbox arrived maybe a month ago, and finally, today, the slingbox is working!! One happy mother-in-law, wife, and Czech grandmother!

Our first problem was that uPNP was turned off by default for the router SMC 7004VBR. And, it wouldn't turn on. It seems there are conversations as follows, but I can't read CZ or HU... http://www.cybex.cz/produkt=3470115/kategorie=785/?contribution-id=113&tab-na... ; http://pcforum.hu/tarsalgo/37888/SMC+7004VBR-UPNP+disabled.html - in the end I have no idea how my relatives fixed this.

(BTW: I could see the device using http://srs.slingmedia.com/getDeviceInfo.asp?id= - but there was no way of telling whether the Slingbox uPNP request had had a positive or negative response.)

The last problem was that we were getting no sound. On close examination of the chart "spectrum of a system G" on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL#PAL_B.2C_G.2C_D.2C_K_or_I I realised that there was a problem with the frequency band of PAL-D (automatically chosen as a consequence of telling the Slingbox that it was in the Czech Republic) being too narrow, cutting off the audio.

"On RF (i.e. through a Modulator or TV Aerial) the difference between I, D/H and B/G is audio. These use different audio subcarriers, so with mismatch on Modulator Settings or an imported TV there will be perfectly normal Colour Video, but possibly no audio. Some TVs and VHS tuners have multiple filters in parallel or switched for the 6 MHz, 5.5 MHz, 6.5 MHz or 4.5 MHz sound carriers."

Telling the Slingbox that it was in India fixed it.

To answer my own question, about "selecting a channel on cable" it turns out that the relative's carrier, UPC, is sending an analog signal down cable.

I guess this means I didn't need the Pro at this time, but it does future proof us... the buying from the UK, shipping, and getting a relative to do connect the router is something I'd prefer not to repeat.

I read somewhere that some cable companies mix UHF and VHF signals in unconventional ways. This might mean that we are missing some channels. This, slingpeople, is a battle for another day.
