The following news item appears on the NBC news site:

     http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24936796/

Though it says nothing about outbound Internet traffic, I cannot but wonder if there will be additional charges for uploading data?  How much data is received by those (students, vacationers, expatriots, etc.) who are using their SlingPlayer at home?

Does anybody for Beaumont, TX, care to comment on the effect this will have on their use of the SlingBox?

Metered billing IMHO is coming. It's just a mater of time. I can see all Other U.S. cable providers looking at ways to rein in heavy users.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

The article says the cap includes both upload and download...

"Those prices cover the cable portion of subscription bundles that include video or phone services. Both downloads and uploads will count toward the monthly cap."

God I hope Verizon doesn't go the CAP route with their FIOS service. I mean that is the best part of Verizon FIOS. Basically they are offering tons of BANDWIDTH while Comcast needs to limit bandwidth.

The Washington Post reports that Comcast is offering the similar pay-as-you-go plan:

     Washington Post

It lists three cities that will be using this trial billing procedure:

   Warrenton, Va.

   Chambersburg, Pa.

   Beaumont, Tx.

Limits of 40 GB for $55 are being suggested.

I would be interested in knowing if anybody from these communities has a SlingBox or SlingPlayer and how this scheme might effect their Internet bill.

Slinging probably won't be a problem, but anyone who uses an online backup service such as Mozy and streams HD video (Vudu, Xbox, Apple TV) like I do would be paying overage fees or cut off. Caps or tiers are probably necessarry and not inherently a bad thing, but 40GB is so LOW it offends me.

I agree - I don't know how closely the recording size compares to the download size when using the SlingPlayer with the At-Large Recorder, but I expect that they are pretty close.

On my LAN a 2 hour recording takes close to 1.5 GB.  I suspect that the LAN use will not be covered by these limits and the stream over the Internet is substantially less than over the LAN.  Since, I don't normally do recordings over the Internet, I cannot make any statement about this specific situation.  Sometime over the next week, I will try to get to a WiFi spot and do a simple test.
