I am a little confused on this analog to digital conversion.  I understand that it affects rabbit ear TVs.  Does it have any impact on the slingbox tuner when hooked directly from the wall to the TV?

They say if you have cable TV, you don't have to do anything.  The thing is, if you have an analog TV hooked to cable without a box, how is that going to work?  Is it really only changing through the air waves?

As long as you are PAYING for cable you'll be fine until 2011 I think the date is. All Cable/Sat companies are required to convert all their signals from digital to analog. The only people that will have issues are those that use the old fashion anntena on their roof or TV. If you are running the AV with cable (Comcast, TW, etc) you'll be fine.

question: come 2011, even when they switch the cable to all digital...wouldnt someone be able to run the line to a cable box, then on to the slingbox and then to the router to get it to work?

I think the difference here is that until 2011 it will be possible to use the slingbox without having to use the cable box.

I find it preferable to use a direct line from the cable to the slingbox (without using the cablebox) because I am not competing for control of the cable box with anyone at home. The downside is that I cannot watch the scrambled digital stations (or the recorded shows on the DVR) but for me this is a decent compromise to avoid using the cable box.

After 2011 I'll worry about what I do at that time. Most likely by 2011 we will be on to new methods of watching tv over computers.

I don't think the Tuner will work after 2011. I do not think the Tuner has IR blasters with it. So even if you ran the analog NTSC out of a cable box, the Tuner would have no way to control it.

The cable companies do not have to do away with analog cable after 2011. They probably will though. The dirty little secret is that now days they simulcast all the basic (analog) channels on the digital side with QAM. But only the broadcast channels and a handful of others (a few religious and infomercial channels mainly) are in clear QAM. The rest of basic cable is scrambled. So it will be a revenue move for the cable companies to force you to rent a cable box or cable card. The first cable card is generally free but they charge for cards after that...

I have a Slingbox A/V and no set top box. I have the following (is there a better way?)

Coax into old TV
TV out (using A/V) into Slingbox
Quality is terrible on this set up. I tried it using a Verizon digital-converter box (at another location) and the quality was GREAT!

SO, I bought a digital-to-analog converter that is *supposed* to demod the signal but I'm unable to pick up any channels.

Any ideas?

Well, the digital to analog converter boxes ONLY work for over the air signals from an antenna. Those signals use a signal format called ATSC (Advanced Television System for Color). If you attempt to hook up a cable line to the converter, it won't work. Digital cable channels use a format called QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation). So it won't pick anything up.

If you have cable, I'd suggest ponying up and getting a cable box.
