I have had a horrible experience with my slingbox so far.

When I go to configure in initial setup I notice the preview screen on the right side freeze just seconds after the box picks up the source signal. I am able to proceed with no problems until the IR setup at which point the configuration freezes and I eventually get a notice that says that the slingbox lost its network connection.

I need help. I have hard wired the box to two computers, tried the setup with and without sources, tried it wirelessly with two computers, checked for any and all firewalls, and I have had no success. I spent most of the day online with peeps from the sling support and have gotten nowhere.

I really want this to work. I am moving to mexico in a month and need to watch Real Football this fall. I'm beginning to think I'm in a real pickle and will probably end up not using it if something miraculous doesn't happen. I tried returning the box to best buy, but because the gift was purchased for me in October they gave me a no-no.

If you have any ideas please shoot them my way.

Josh

It sounds like you might have a bad box. If you have a friend who can lend you his box to test on your network, I would do that. Then you'll know if it's your box or not.

The strange thing is that when I run configuration without video sources plugged in I can run through it just fine (of course then I'm not able to setup my remote control and I'm also having port forwarding issues). This makes me think the slingbox is not the problem. It seems that the transfer of data between the router and box is the issue. I'm going to try a different router asap. Does this sound logical?

It is not a port forwarding issue. When you are on your local network, unless you have a firewall on your computers, all ports are open.

What network equipment do you have? And how is everything connected?

Well I just received my new box today and am trying to configure it. The new box won't even recognize the network connnection at all. At least my old box would connect, it just lost the connection during configuration. I'm beginning to have my doubts about slingbox and the company. No one has been able to help me, the support people closed 40 minutes early today, and the "new" box I received today is worse than the first. I do know it's not the computer (I tried it on my macbook and my dell), it's not the cables, it's not the router, and it's not the box. But if it's none of these things what is it? And no, it's not me ;) I'm at my whits end. Right now I'm just trying to run a config w/o a video source and that's not even working without dropping the connection (with my old box cause my new one won't even find the network). I'm working with a Linksys wrt54g and i'm hard wired at the box and computer. HELP!!

Please be descriptive with your network equipment and setup. It's hard to help if we don't have the big picture.

Let me give you an example of my setup.

DSL->Speed Link Modem -> D-Link DIR130 Router -> Cat 5e Cable to Sling Link (a) -> Slinglink (b) -> Dlink 5 Port Network Switch -> Cat5e Cable to Slingbox -> Slingbox HD Connect -> DirecTV HR10-250

All my computers are connected Wirelessly, and everything has a static IP address.

Now... what is your setup.

Cable->Motorola SB5120 Modem->Linksys wrt54g v.5 Router->Cat 5e Cable to slingbox->no video source connected because I'm keeping it simple. All hard wired right now. Private IP address for evrything.

Do you have DHCP on, on your router? To do the initial setup, this needs to be on. After that, you need to have a Static IP address for the slingbox.

DHCP is on. What are the "DHCP Renew" and "DHCP release" buttons I'm seeing under my router's setup menu?

July 10, 2008 11:15 AM

DHCP on your router could refer to your internal network or how you've connected to your ISP. It matters where you see this dialogue on your router's config page. Since you have a new box, I would try calling sling support to see if they can help you.

As a side note, since you have a pro box, I would bypass the receiver and plug the coax directly onto the slingbox. That might help.

Phil,

thanks for your help. i've decided to no longer throw hours of my life down the pit that is slingbox configuration. i know its not my box because the new one they sent doesn't work either. it must be some quircky networking issue that neither i nor the sling folks can resolve. so i've given up hope. the sad news is that i can't get my money back because its been over 30 days since i bought it. i've never had difficulty settings any piece of technology up before, but this has me stumped and, quite frankly, so frustrated that i've given up. thanks.

Since you've given up hope...how about a firmware upgrade to the slingbox. Or is it the most recent?
