My TV has PIP, and my cable box is dual tuner - is there a way to have a different channel on the computer than what is on the TV?

I have tried everything. I have HDMI monster cable connecting my TV (Samsung) to my HD DVR (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD), slingbox pro connected to the DVR with the S-cable. I can not get rid of the HDMI because of my service provider TWC (basically I will have no sound).

So is it possible with this set-up or by adding something else to not always have the TV for viewing the sling box remotely and view different channels on a computer vs at home on the TV?

Thanks!

Use the coaxial cable input of your pro and connect it directly to the outlet on the wall. It's only your basic cable, but does not affect what it being displayed onthe tv

So bypass the DVR cable box? Does that mean all the channels will be available?

Why can't you use component video to the TV? Why do you think you will not have sound?

Back to your original question, If you're using a cable box you can't view a different channel on the SlingBox unless you get a second cable box.

If you hook basic cable into the coax input on the Pro you can watch basic cable channels without affecting the TV using the cable box.

If I don't connect my TV to cable box with an HDMI - there is no sound. I don't know why, it has something to with TWC. What I need to know how with the HDMI, I can use the remote on my computer to turn my tv on/off?

Right no it only turns my cable box on/off, so the TV has to always be on for someone to remotely view via the computer (you can hear sound but no image if the TV is off).

The remote on the computer doesn't look exactly mine at home, and the buttons AUX, VCR, TV, CAL do nothing.

The problem you're having is likely with HDCP. HDMI devices can sense if the connected display is on or off and will refuse to output video (entirely) if it's not on. Blame Scientific Atlanta.

The only way around it is to NOT use HDMI between the cable box and the TV, or to get a separate cable box and dedicate it to Slinging.

Now, you CAN get sound if you don't use HDMI. Disconnect the HDMI cable entirely and use component video. Make sure that:

1. You ALSO connect the audio cables from the cable box audio output to the right input on the TV.

2. You double check to make sure the cable box's internal volume control is not turned all the way down, disabled, etc. (Many people run into this).

You said "My TV has PIP, and my cable box is dual tuner."

Does the TV's PIP work?  If it does, can you watch any cable chanel on the TV while you watch any other cable channel in the PIP window?  If you can, unless I'm missing something, then you must have two separate inputs going into the TV.  You said one hookup to the TV is HDMI.  What is the other one?

The older I get, the better I was.

Matt - how do I double check the internal sound of the cable box? I am not sure if you are familiar with NYC Time Warner Cable service but it is very common to have audio issues - I have had three boxes Motorola and SA - they all have the same problem plus I have run a number of audio tests - but maybe you know of one that I am not aware of - I am willing to try...

Bancado: Yes the PIP works - I can watch two channels on my TV at the same time and even on my slingbox (as long as it is the same playing on my TV at the same time). The 2nd output doesn't allow for the S-video cable and the regular connection doesn't work - either my service or the box is blocking something.
